All the above answers are correct, but the biggest reason is that most restaurants are not made with delivery in mind. Take pizza for instance: when you deliver pizza, you still fold boxes and wash dishes and mop floors when you're not delivering. There's work for the delivery guys to do. In a standard restaurant, there's no work for them. The prep is done during prime dinner hours. They can't wait tables You can't have four guys standing around taking turns doing dishes when one guy will do. That's where door dash comes in. They provide the drivers so the restaurant owner doesn't have to.

It's not the delivery service who upcharges the menu items, it's the restaurant since all the delivery platforms take a significant cut, up to 30% on every dollar sold through the platform from the restaurant. Some states/cities have pushed a 15% commission cap to help restaurants but in return, the delivery services had to include an additional service fee pushed onto the customer.

It's a difficult situation to provide low cost on demand delivery from any restaurant to any person, it's even more difficult to do so fairly. If you take a cut from the guys delivering, they'll quit and lose your core service. If you take from the restaurant, less will be inclined to join the platform. If you push it onto the customer, like what's currently happening, you'll get this thread. Finally, the delivery platform can take on the cost, which isn't sensible in their interest with paper thin margins already. That's why this is a difficult situation, every aspect of trying to reduce cost in this business model will effect the operation immensely.

See, I don't understand why the commission and service fee aren't just listed separately. List the normal in-store prices when I'm ordering, and show me that using your service is costing another $12 explicitly instead of having to wonder if the menu prices are completely fucked on the app. It's also dumb when one app has different prices for the same restaurant than another.

Low IQ post. It's a percentage on the gross price, so whether its added onto the individual items or added as a lump transaction fee is purely cosmetic. The only discrepancy is if the restaurant for some reason choose not to bother with the app's cut and actually posts in-store prices; in which case, I'd like those restaurants to be advertised as such.

Hey anon, I know you've gotten a fuck ton of replies but here are my two cents.

I'm French, land of the best food in the world (fuck you Italy, you ain't even close).
I come from a decent upper-middle class family wich have taught me how to cook French food and other. Therefore I enjoy cooking and rarely use these kinda of apps. Exempt during lockdowns when I can't go outside and I really want a burger, even then I usually wait for a reduction or whatever.

Now let's look at my girlfriend and some of my friends. They come from a lower-middle class background. Parents were always working, they almost never cooked except for special occasions. Therefore they see cooking as a chore not as ART. So they hate cooking, doing the dishes.
That's why these fucktards are ready to buy a pizza for 15$ and pay the outrageous delevry fees + the website fees.
Even worse, since they've got a salary they think it's no big deal to them. Yet most of them realise that its a huge drain on their budget at the end of the month.

And finally you've got the worst exemple of then all. My roomate. This dude, never learned how to go grocerie shopping. since he's a retarded millenial, he doe'snt want to learn.
"Why should I go to the grocerie store anon when I can get my food delivered home ?".

I used to deliver food, a lot of students ordered and I think it's mostly because people can't cook and they're fucking lazy.
Most of the people were middle-class, I believe lower and upper class were equally represented and they both tipped awfully(although I'm from Europe and we don't really tip)
Sometimes I did wonder how people would pay like 25€ delivery for two 3€ bagel sandwiches, those people didn't even seem wealthy.
Never ordered food myself, I don't like the idea of having other people deliver food to me for some reason, just feels lazy to me.

you’re usually paying the driver a larger amount using these apps.
all of them have a service fee of $2 + 15% of your order with $2 going to the driver and 15% to the company. then there’s the delivery fee which also goes to the driver, and the tip.

so if you order $10 worth of mcchickens, the delivery fee is $2, and you tip your driver $2, your total will be about $17, with $6 going to the driver, and a couple cents for the tax and the service fee.
the tip is not necessary. so just make it $0 and the driver will still be getting $4 and at this point you’re not really paying an insane amount for the variety of food you’re getting.
