Do you judge people if they can't cook, not even something as simply as meatballs?

>> No.15315689

I mock my GF a lot because she can't cook for shit but I enjoy it because I get most the control of the menu and how shit comes out.

i dunno about judge, make fun of, yes..but judge?

Why would meatballs be your benchmark? They're pretty advanced

Here's the level system:

>level 1: can cook eggs and pasta
>level 2: can prepare most common ingredients, e.g. dicing onions, peeling potatoes, mincing garlic
>level 3: knowledge of basic but less-common techniques (e.g. roux, julienne, browning meats, frying, emulsification, reduction, etc.)
>level 4: can follow most online recipes without making common mistakes (e.g. letting bottom of soup burn, seizing chocolate/cheese when melting), can easily make adjustments
>level 5: know what all common spices taste like and when to add them, awareness of dishes needing more/less acidity, sweetness, etc.
>level 6: able to improvise and heavily modify recipes without difficulty, some knowledge in one or more niche areas (breadmaking, smoking, canning/pickling, butchering etc.)
>level 7: easily develop recipes without guidance, highly knowledgeable of obscure ingredients
>level 8: meatballs
>level 9: mastery in one or more niche areas, expertise in presentation, develops new techniques and flavor combinations

>>15315686
If they're honestly trying to learn and seem at least somewhat aware of their mistakes then no

>> No.15315780

cooking is a hobby, anon. not everyone has the time or interest to devote to it, and, like any hobby, the process of becoming proficient is often miserable

No, I can't really cook, so who am I to judge? I can make eggs and grill a steak or something, and follow a recipe to make something that's a reasonable facsimile of what I was trying to make, but I'd certainly never serve anyone my food with pride or high expectations.

>> No.15315945

>>15315686
Hell yes, although that's because
>can't cook
is a low bar for me. Like if people can't follow the directions on a package. When I was in fucking HIGH SCHOOL a friend of mine called me over summer break asking me how to make cup noodles.

>> No.15315966

>>15315686
Depends on the person. If the person has enough money but very little time, like a lawyer or a business owner, cooking could be fun for them but ultimately unnecessary. Anyone with lesser means and more free time can and should learn to cook for health and financial reasons.

Yes, I am very judgmental about them. I conclude that they are people who can't cook.

At some point, your level system becomes a skill tree. Let's say beyond 6.

>> No.15316734

>>15315686
Yes. Every adult should be able to cook a handful of dishes. It's not difficult or time consuming to cook something decent and a basic skill.

>> No.15317785

>>15315686
I do. I don't trust people that can't cook or don't know how to drive. It's like basic adult skills, what the fuck are you doing?

>> No.15317810

>>15315686
It's okay to not be able too cook in the sense that not everyone can do everything skill-wise. However, it's very expensive to always have to rely on restaurants and other food places when you want to eat. Being able to cook saves you a lot of money

>> No.15317869

I hardly ever cook for various reasons, so I think it's understandable that I'd have a low level of skill.

If someone regularly cooks and has done so for years, but still does it badly, I think it says something about their ability to learn.

Being able to feed yourself is not a fucking hobby. Is doing your own laundry or brushing your teeth a hobby too?

>> No.15318002

>>15317903
Laundry is a hobby for some people, I know a guy who insists on using a certain type of washing machine and collects detergent. I'm sure brushing your teeth is to some too. Why are you even here if you're not interested in food other than as fuel to survive?

>> No.15318017

>>15315686
Absolutely, it makes me think less of them because cooking is one of my hobbies and everyone not liking what I like is a shit person.

>> No.15318035

>>15315686
Yes, I think making meatballs is a litmus test, determining what kind of person you are.

So it's important to make meatballs, to demonstrate you're not one of 'them'.

My point is that cooking is a necessity that every adult should have a basic grasp of. I'm not talking about autists that collect washing machines.

I'm like 6-7. Cook most things fairly decently and bake bread, make jerky, pickle things, grill. Constantly try out new things. Presentation is lacking, but who gives a shit, I'm not a chef, most of the time I'm the only one eating it.

>> No.15318224

Well just because you have to cook doesn't mean you'll be any good at it. A lot of people just through the motions. Some people don't cook at all.

>My point is that cooking is a necessity
No eating is a necessity. cooking for yourself is a hobby. You feed yourself by having a job. Cooking hasn't been necessary for 100's of years.

>> No.15318300

Providing food for yourself is pretty much the first and most important thing a person needs to learn. Anyone that can't do this is obviously unfit to live.

I'd say >>15316466 is closer, cooking skill is much more of a tree than a line. I've made my own recipes for soups and sauces, and can make a steak better than my local joint, but I still fuck up my roux's just because that doesn't come up often in what I like to make most nights.
