i knew this guy who loved coffee. he was absolutely addicted to caffeine. constantly twitchy and irritable. one of the reasons why i stayed away from caffeine for so long, i really did not want to turn out like him. but now i'm interested. whats a good coffee (or any caffeinated beverage) that will help me stay up later and help me wake up in the morning but will not turn me into a monster?

It depends on the type of coffee machine you have.
Different machines have a lot of different variables.

It's a simple water extraction.
There's actually a whole bunch of different chemicals that are extracted in the process, some at lower temperatures and some at higher temperatures, so basically you have a window between a minimum temperature&time, and a maximum temperature&time, and the shape of this window determines the subtle nature of the coffee you brew.

For example, you can do a very long and cold extraction, where you end up with a very pale redish liquid.
The deep black that is commonly associated with coffee in the popular consciousness is the colour of a hot extract that is done quickly.

If you can get yerba mate where you live, go for that. I find it less intense and tweaky than coffee or even tea. Or pic related

And there's a type of machine that works with any heating method, such a fire.

Where did the caffeine meme come from?
The one time I felt the effects of caffeine was that one time when I was in high school and bought tablets and had one right before getting a haircut.

You're just not in touch with your feelings and are probably living unconsciously without knowing it. Meditate more.

More importantly, is coffee good for you? Seems to have not been good for your friend.

You're not really going to get high quality stuff with a Keurig, but you can use it to narrow down what kind of coffee you like. Get a sample pack or something with various roasts, and consider getting one of those refillable pods so you can grind your own beans and use those. Then you can look into v60s and $200 grinder autism once you know what you like.
Nice quads btw.

Don't start down this road or you'll end up on a street corner sucking dick for a half-tablet of NoDoz. That's probably what your friend is doing now, if he's not dead.

I'll be disliked for saying this but you could start with instant to get a general feel for the taste and the caffeine instead of going all out.
At the moment, I have a coffee press, but I wouldn't usually recommend that shit off the bat

Go to your local grocery, or small "organic" store like New Seasons Whole Foods etc and buy a coffee that's like 12 bucks a bag. Try a south American single origin like Columbia etc and while you're there, buy a pour over cone they're like 10 bucks. Get some filters too. I bet your parents have a cheap grinder at home ask them.

Grind your shit medium coarse and boil some water. let the water sit for a minute and then pour some over the coffee. Don't add milk. If you don't like it without milk buy another blend. If you must add milk don't add much.

There, you're practically an expert.

One more picture. Don't grind it too fine.
Go to the coffee thread that's always up next time, they're nice (if not a tad snobby)

nice quads BTW, I think keurigs make what would otherwise be interesting coffee into bland, samey cups. i much prefer pour overs, french press, or aeropress, but honestly, my parents have a keurig machine that i use, and it is damn convenient if i'm really running out of time and i just need coffee, but i don't want to work too hard for it.

found a moka pot in grandparents house
what kind of ground coffee works for this?

>> No.15242707

Unless you have health problems, like severe anxiety, etc.. you probably can handle having two cups of coffee a day. Breakfast coffee can make waking up early worth it and something to look forward to - a nice afternoon coffee to get you through the rest of the day is also nice. Get a cheap pour-over dripper set from the grocery store and invest in one of those kettles that lets you set/monitor the temperature.

>>15241231
There's nothing to it, you just put some ground coffee in a bottle of cold water, shake it up, and stick it in the fridge for about 12 hours, then strain the grounds out (or pour the coffee off the top if you have steady hands).
Easy, and next to no labor, it just takes forever.
