Amidst a wave of politcally-motivated product logo changes, this one is merely a matter of bad design. If you were not already familiar with the Pringles mascot from earlier logos, would you even be able to tell that the new one is supposed to be a mustachioed face? Maybe if the eyes were more than black dots... but they've pushed the abstraction a little too far.

Unless they were paying homage to Weebl & Bob (pic related), which would be cool.

Talented graphic designers could earn twice that much in the bigger markets (though of course cost-of-living is a factor in NYC, SF, etc). But you're missing the bigger picture. A logo change for a successful mass-market product like Pringles is not just a matter of one dude spending an hour dicking around in Photoshop. A change like this involved countless meetings, discussion of brand strategy and messaging, review of competitors' logos & current trends, mockups, A/B consumer testing, and so on. And once a new design is chosen, it's not just a matter of updating the graphics used for the can labels--there's also the website and online adverts. And updated templates for future TV commercials, print adverts, store display cases/boxes, billboards, etc. Possibly mutltiplied by x languages for non-English markets, depending on how the assets are managed.

I don't work in graphic design, but from working in related fields among them, I should guess that this change easily cost a million dollars.
