If I were wanting to make something like this for a party, would I use an Italian loaf for the bread?

Never had one in my life, order one couple weeks ago thinking it was going to be like a calzone. No sauce in it, marinara cup on the side. It's just cheesy bread in slices with your choice of ingredients in it, never again.
