Got a good deal on a 40 of Maker's Mark that I plan on using to make hard eggnog, but I've been sipping it neat, and using it for hot toddies and old fashioneds as well.

Anyway I had 2 glasses of bourbon 2 hours ago, and as I am trying to get to sleep, I'm shaky and feeling like shit. Why does alcohol do this after you stop drink and are awake while sobering up? Does it happen to everyone, is it just me, or is a sign of alcoholism?

No; I've been drinking a fifth of liquor almost daily for a decade and I never got shakes when I do stop for a while. Currently sober for more than a week, the longest I've been in 5 years. Usually I have like 1 or 2 days a week without booze.

Oban is fine, but people rightfully shit on it. Reason being is it is one of Diageo's "The Six Classic Malts" which have increased in price throughout the years but not kept up with recent trends or quality standards. Low apv, chill filtration, caramel coloring, not as good as they once were, yet more expensive than ever. It isn't that any of them taste bad, but rather that Diageo fucking sucks and they SHOULD be shit on.

You say that, but what is the competition?
Dalwhinnie 15 can barely be touched at its price. At least not within the genre of light complex whiskies. Note: I have noticed some burgers are charged double.
Talisker 10 is probably beaten buy Old Pulteney 12, but it's a close thing and the Pulteney is also 40%. But Pulteney hasn't been imported for that long, and it looks like Talisker is going with the Coalgate strategy of releasing as many options as possible to give you the illusion of choice and make sure one is always on sale, so it has the edge on value.
Cragganmore is bad value. Plenty of better Speyside options.
Oban is fine considering the age.
Lagavulin 16 basically has no competitors. You're not seeing much Islay that old at all.
Glenkinchie 12 is another poor value one.

But if they swapped Oban and Glenkinchie for like Clynleish and Inchgower (never had an Original Bottling), they'd have a fairly untouchable line up.

They're not worse/much worse quality. A higher abv bottle cost more, a lot more than the percentage of abv increase. Chill filtration and coloring win in blind and visual only tests, it'd obviously be cheaper not to do it.

Diego buying a distillery you liked and making it worse is a problem, but I don' think they're doing bad things for the industry. I think they do put a lot of pressure on the smaller distilleries not to gouge you for small perks like nicer barrels and higher abv.

Of those it's probably the Quinta Ruben.
Here, in ausbucks and fully taxed, I've seen them for $68, $105, and $90 respectively.

In general for Glen Moray:
Normal NAS: probably one of the better single malt absolute bottom shelf NASs.
Finished NAS range: not a one of them isn't completely undermined by the youth of the base spirit.
15: Killer value. Competes in price against all the cheaper 10-12 year old Speyside competition and blows them out of the water.
18: Haven't tried it yet, but it costs literally double what the $15 costs so the value is gone. I have no idea what they were thinking.

Benromach Peated.
Loch Lomond Inchmoan.
Ailsa Bay.

2009 Wilson & Morgan Beathan (undisclosed lowland) was good.
Wilson & Morgan Ardmore 8 was good. I've had Ardmore Legacy and it was trash, I might try Ardmore Traditional in the future but I'm skeptical.

Not Whisky, but depending on your market. Mezcal has some badass smokiness.
Much different from a peat smoke, but they do some cool shit sometimes. Like pechuga style or they distill in a claypot instead of copper.
It can be expensive though, some agave can take years to grow. Also chances are, its being made by a farmer in his backyard with 3 of his cousins lmao.

Not necessarily. A more reliable way of getting a "significant difference in flavor," rather than relying on price, would be something with a high rye mashbill like Old Grand-Dad 114 or Four Roses Single Barrel. Looked it up. You're right.
If you want an OF to taste significantly different while still using bourbon then use Old Grand-Dad 114 for the high proof or go in the completely opposite direction and use something wheated like Maker's Mark.
I wouldn't do this because I don't like wheated bourbons; I find them boring and they won't stand out in an OF. But it'll definitely make it taste significantly different from what you're doing now.
And yeah, maybe try and find a straight rye with 95% or more rye in the mashbill.

long time whiskey drinker here. If newbies are trying to get into whiskey and learn the distinct flavors more, starting with a neutral and then incrementally introducing them to slight variations is, imo not the greatest way to do it. Most people when they start drinking (including me) think whiskey just tastes like whiskey. I like to ask people if they like peat or smoke or fruity or spicy or vanilla, and then pick one extreme and one neutral/opposing to compare. For example, if they like smoke I'll pick Talisker or laphroig and compare with glenfiditch/glenlivet, you see a lightbulb go off in their head when they realize "oh, these really DO taste different.". It helps calibrate their brain to what "whiskey" tastes like a lot better.
Personal favorite is Balvenie Carribean Cask 14yr., and that partially stems from my huge love of rum.
Also, DON'T sleep on blended whiskey. Some blends are, imo, superior to single malt, it just doesn't have the prestige and rarity. Monkey Shoulder got big recently-ish, but 5-10 years ago it was an absolute steal for how good it is. I keep a bottle for guests.

Springbank 10 is good, but the US importer has a retarded mark up on it. The last time I saw Springbank 10 in stores it was $90 msrp. Glen Scotia 15 or Kilkerran 12 are better campeltown intro scotches at their price points. I'd argue Dalwhinnie 15 is a better intro to highlands.

I've still yet to visit Ranger Creek. It tasted young, but that's actually okay by me. I kinda like that flavor profile and also enjoy drinking white dog. My favorite offering from them is still the Rimfire (the mesquite-smoked single malt).

I've had the Still Austin regular bourbon which I thought was pretty tasty, and I also have a bottle of Garrison Brothers Cowboy which was like a small explosion in my mouth. A bit overwhelming to drink regularly, I thought. Speaking of Garrison Brothers, I went on a distillery tour when news crews were out to do a piece, so it was actually Dan Garrison who led our tour. Pretty neato.

My actual favorite Texas whiskeys are the Ranger Creek Rimfire and the Balcones Rye. The latter tastes completely unlike any other rye, I love it. I haven't had a chance to check out Balcones' single malt offerings, though that's on the docket for the new year.

Stroudwater Distilling (ME)'s Belfry Bourbon is excellent, they finish it in stout barrels.
Mad River (VT)'s Burnt Rock Bourbon is also a great choice, if you can find it anywhere. They smoke some of the mashbill over maple wood, which gives it a pleasant note of smonk.
If you're into rum, check out Bully Boy's Rum Cooperative blends, they're usually pretty primo.

Tried them both and went in the next day to buy the other two bottles of 18yo they had. All oct 2019, so if the rumours are true (distillery was closed from 1996 to 2002, so they don't have actual 18yo, but likely 23-24yo), i bought some extremely cheap bottles of the finest sherry bombs there is.

From left to right it's Barrell Whisky batch 4, Barrell Rye batch 2, and a Barrell Rye single barrel store pick. The Barrell Whisky is 11yr Tennessee Bourbon and 11yr indiana whisky finished in Rye and Rum Barrels, the batched Rye is 5yr Polish Rye mixed with 5-6yr MGP Rye, and the single barrel Rye is a 14yr Canadian Rye from the distillers of Crown Royal. Barrell Whiskies are a steal for $65 but I haven't had the dovetail, infinity, or single barrel releases yet. The Ryes were $95 each, and are pretty great too. I love how Barrell bottles everything under the sun indiscriminately, with minimal filtration at cask strength every time. Every bottle I've got from them always has sediment the size of grains of sand because it's just the rawest, most minimal filtered product you can present every time, of the most random, off the beaten path whiskies. For sure the staple of my rotation.

But I have never had a home bar and most likely never will.
I usually just buy one bottle and drink from that until it's gone and then buy another one. Never really felt a need to have several different whiskys in the house at the same time.

I wonder if that means I'm a pleb or something.

Ideally I'd never have to visit the same bottle twice on the one night.
Pre Corona I was drinking with mates and we had ~30 bottles open at a time. So not only would you drink 10 very different drams but next week you could go for a different 10.
Visiting the whisky bar was even better again. Between two people we'd share 40 half pours of different whiskies and rapidly try new stuff. Hopefully this week they get rid of the booking requirement that was being maintained after the lockdown laws loosened.
