>According to the NTSB's preliminary report, customers in the accident area received gas from a low-pressure (0.5 psi) distribution network which, in turn, was fed from a high-pressure (75 psi) main pipeline via regulators controlled by sensors measuring pressure in the low-pressure pipes. At the time of the accident, workers were replacing some of the low-pressure piping, but the procedure set out by Columbia Gas for doing this failed to include transfer of a regulator's pressure sensor from the old, disused piping to the new. As a result, when the old pipe was depressurized, the regulator sensed zero pressure on the low-pressure side and opened completely, feeding the main pipeline's full pressure into the local distribution network.

>The faulty procedure used caused natural gas to build up in homes within a matter of minutes. Multiple explosions and fires were reported over a very short period of time in the towns of Lawrence, Andover, and North Andover beginning about 4:15 pm (EDT). Through the evening emergency crews responded to between 40 and 80 fires. At one time, as many as 18 fires were burning at once, and Andover officials struck a maximum 10-alarm response.

House I grew up in didn't have gas, most of the houses on our street did.
None of the houses were insulated, pre-WWII construction.
My dad tapped into the neighbors gas line pre-meter and he and my grandfather installed the lines in our house.
Gas dryer, water heater, furnace, 3 fireplace inserts, BBQ, stove and wall ovens.
They used galvanized pipe and painted it black.
They did this in the middle 1960's. Parents died and I sold the house, suburb of San Francisco, Youtube headquarters is a few blocks away, thank you, thank you.
Passed all inspections.
Neighbor house was purchased and torn down, end of free gas.
Now the old house has no heat, no cooking, nothing.
Get sued, not my problem, here is the county inspection, my inspection, your inspection, house was sold as is. Never thought it was odd having all that gas and no bills.
PG&E tells the homeowner $75k in hookup. Plumber says $50k to 100k to correctly gas line the house. Utility said they owe maximum rate use per month for 10 years of ownership, plus fines and interest.
They tried to sue my parents estate again, estate is gone, after sale disbursements were made and the Trust was dissolved.

When the supply main blue up in San Bruno, I gulped a few times, gad explosion happened just up the road, news at first was vague, this was before the new owners discovered my dad's handy work, at first I thought shit dad's pipe work finally rusted through.

No gas for me, all electric, off grid, solar with battery wall for night time.

Given the choice, gas is always what i'd go with.

That being said, a good induction top isn't BAD, I just find gas to be a much more intuitive heat to cook with. Especially for delicate temp control.

More intuitive heat.

You can see a flame and roughly gauge how hot it is based on size and color.

You simply can't do that with induction or electric hobs.

If I want a low simmer, i wont look at the knob for the hob to gauge the temp, I'll look at the flame.
