PSA -- Electric Range Users,

These little butane burners only cost like $40 and will change your life. I have a gas range and have recently started using one of these instead for wok cooking. They're really fantastic. Highly recommend picking one of these up if you have an electric coil range.

Get a full sized 3 ring burner for camping and a big 9kg gas tank. Much more economical. You won't go back. 30,000BTUs of sheer masculinity and frying power.

A burner for wok cooking probably is more than $40

PSA butane hob users

The little rig only has around 8000 BTU and you need to change the fuel cartridge about every 90 minutes of cook time.
Get an electric range or an induction hob unless you need the cordless convenience of trying to cook on an overgrown cigarette lighter.

Used to own one and they’re really nice, especially given how portable they are, so you can take them on a picnic or camping or whatever.

OP here. I challenge you to a wok cookoff. I will use my $40 Iwatani burner and you can use your electric range.

Ideally you would have something even more powerful for wok cooking, but this thing destroys electric ranges and is competitive even with a standard home gas range.

I have one that I bring camping, it's the bees tits.

Also, I have a gas range at home but also have pic related. Induction is the absolute best when it comes to searing meat, with my steel non-stick or my cast iron it gets twice as hot as the gas range gets, stew meat gets brown and crusty in about 4 seconds and leaves the middle cold, so it doesn't toughen up and you can make delicious soups with perfect beef

There are bowl shaped electric cooktops/hotplates for woks, i assume he is referring to them

They're great for korean BBQ as well.

Yea I actually got mine to do stuff like this and hotpot. I was just pleasantly surprised to find that it handles high-heat cooking better than my actual range.

I also got it to shoot youtube videos, since it's a lot easier to get a good camera angle when using a table rather than a range with a wall behind it.

That model isn't a powerful enough burner to make me think a wok is practical. I'm content to use any other type of pan that is more suitable.

The 35FW 15k BTU, maybe. Given the relative price of electricity and butane, electric heat is still half the cost and 8x more convenient.

I keep a butane hob around for when the power goes out or when I would like to simmer a hotpot in the center of the dinner table; that's about it.

Have you tried it, anon?

Admittedly my gas range is kind of shit. I am a renter and the high output burner is directly adjacent to a wall, so you can't put a pot or pan on it at all.... But I was surprised by the heat output of this. If you are only looking at BTUs you might be underestimating it. It gets my dry wok to smoking in about 40 seconds.

How is that a wanker thing to do? That's precisely how hotpot is served and eaten.
