This comic reminds me of something that happened to me. I'm not a big chili head. Serranos and the occasional habanero are enough for me.
>go to a Mexican seafood place, order ceviche
>see mild and hot on the menu
>I order ceviche, they never asked me if I wanted mild or hot
>whatever, I assume hot is the regular one
>look at receipt. "MILD"
>instantly feel insulted because of my whiteness
>go back and ask for "hot"
>mfw it was almost inedible
I wish I had stuck with mild so I could actually have tasted the seafood. It tasted like 50/50 habanero juice and lime juice.

I like to take instant ramen from the asian store, not dog shit 20 cent maruchan, and add a shitload of chili oil and sesame oil to it. Also, some soy sauce and garlic salt. Works with pretty much all ramen if you have a sense of the taste profile prior.

I think chilis weren't that common ten years ago, especially in flyover states. Powdered spices were much easier to find.

sichuan beef
about 4-6 servings
what you need
>0.75-1 lb beef strips
>whole dried chili peppers x16
>2 cloves garlic minced
>1 knob ginger julienned
>1 large carrot julienned
>2-3 celery sticks julienned
>2 green onions diced or julienned
>vegetable oil
>lao gan ma/chili bean paste
>chili oil
>red pepper flakes
>1 tsp sesame oil
>1 tbsp soy sauce
>1 tbsp rice wine
>salt
>sichuan pepper
>msg
>white rice, however much you want
what you do
>heat vegetable oil on medium, brown beef
>throw in chili peppers, vegetables, garlic, ginger, sesame oil, soy sauce, wine
>also throw in sichuan pepper, chili oil, lao gan ma, red pepper flakes, salt to taste
>i usually use 2 tsp sichuan pepper, 2 tsp chili oil, 2 tbsp lao gan ma, 1 tbsp red pepper, and a pinch of salt, but you should adjust to your own spice/salt tolerance
>add in msg for authentic, probably like 2-3 tsp? amount is flexible
>mix it all together
>cook until carrots are no longer super hard, like 2-3 min
>serve with white rice
t. had sichuanese gf who'd use absurd amounts of chili oil/lao gan ma and sichuan pepper, this is my best attempt at replicating her recipe with quantities adjusted more to my liking

Anyone from /co/ eats manly frozen food, canned food, fast food, or packaged ramen noodles. Basically if it's not loaded with sodium, MSG, and/or yeast extract they'll find anything else "serviceable". So I wouldn't trust what they say, even with that recipe.
