LLG Red bourbon black honey is still firmly my favorite coffee I've roasted. Shits delish. Got a jar of it offgassing now. Kruve sifters should be here in ~2 weeks if they're to be believed.

Posting the discount code again, doesn't seem like theres any use restrictions so if you want some christmas glass, hop on it.

Currently drinking pic related. It tastes like dark roast. I can't taste the bean. I only taste roast.

Recommend me a good container for my coffee. It seems like when I kick down and buy some nice coffee, it tastes good for 1-2 days and then loses a lot of flavor. Also give me any other tips for coffee storage.

I considered doing this a long time ago, but I never did it. All the extra air space in there will negate the value of the valve unless you suck the air out to create a vaccum. Since I do not have big, luscious lips I cannot press them against a flat surface and suck with significant force. Then I had an idea to glue a wide bore tube or straw to the outside of the lid to facilitate hard sucking. But I decided against it afterall and went with a ziploc bag that I can squeeze the air out of. I only roast a week's worth of coffee anyway.

One more consideration:
I did try sucking coffee air out of a ziploc back using a plastic drinking straw. It did vacuum pack the beans, but it tasted really, really bad. Coffee air is not delicious. Funny because it smells good.

The only thing I can think of is 1. I don't have a burr grinder and people shit on blade grinders but Idk how big of a difference it actually makes 2. I can never really tell when i'm supposed to take it off, I never really hear the spurting and notice as soon as the coffee comes out there are small coffee grinds getting through and coming into the top (grind too small?).

Ive just had latte at work from one of those Lavazza pod vending machines for the first time after months of playing around with my flair+C40 setup and some good quality East African beans during muh imposed neetdom by dictator Corona Dan. Theres a huge difference in flavour profile and quality. So huge that I had to throw away the rest of the pod coffee after taking a few sips and just got a Redbull for my energy fix. It was either over extracted or under extracted. The pod beans had this low quality stale robusta quality that is hard to digest after months of being spoiled by freshly roasted Ethiopian/Kenyan/South American Arabica. Specialty coffee is like good quality scotch where you can taste different and wonderful flavours, and tends to be "bright" as you drink the rest of the cup of latte. Whereas the Lavazza pod machine just tasted burnt and had no discernible depth. My flair+C40 setup has ruined pod based vending machine coffee for me. I might need to bring my Flair+C40 to work or go to the coffee shop a few miles away to enjoy my afternoon coffee.

Id say yes. There was a time when I mildly enjoyed pod based coffee from a vending machine(black/milk) although I wasnt crazy about it. But ever since I got into this hobby, pod based coffees and starbucks style syrup coffees tastes revolting. Its like eating plain white 20 cent a piece vietnamese roll that taste like paper after living off woodfired sourdough bread made by french artisan bakers or a nice chiabatta. Or eating cheap canned tuna after tasting a 50 dollar red fin tuna sushi.

Or eating cheap condense milk chocolate bars loaded with sugar and palm oil after experiencing good quality dark chocolate. Your palette does change. Those foods will never be the same to you even if you loved them in your youth.

Really like the coffee I have, but it's about time to spoil myself again. Going to my favorite roaster & getting some kenyan & ethiopian. If I don't get coffee from there there are 2 or 3 decent local brands I can always find at the store. Used to barista for a living, I almost miss getting free espresso drinks whenever I wanted but my caffeine tolerance was through the fucking roof. Eventually all I drank was espresso & cream, with about 6 double shots of espresso in there.

It could be an acquired taste, but it depends on the beans itself, how fresh they are, and how they’re brewed

Ive been playing with my flair signature and a C40 since the lockdown started, and its been a quite a few months since my first shitty cup of under extracted coffee and I think Im pulling pretty consistently decent shots these days . But now, I wanna upgrade because Im finding the signature brew head too small for my liking since Im only able to pull enough liquid gold to make 200 mls of long black or lattes. Its annoying because it takes me till my last few gulps of coffee to get an appreciation of the flavour profile and umami of a good quality bean which by then my cup is near empty and Im left feeling unsatisfied.

Should I invest in a Pro 2 brew head or wait a few months and get the gaggia classic or Robot with the pressure gauge? Is the Pro 2 brew head able to pull shots as great as a gaggia or a robot?

I'm sort of a pleb so forgive the questions but I've been wondering:
Do I need to ALWAYS use the coarsest grind for French press? I use a Bodum Bistro grinder so it has a good range, and the coarsest setting comes out nice but holy shit does it use so many beans, and the pieces are much larger than I've typically seen most commercial grinders spit out at their coarsest settings. Obviously I can probably move it a click or two back but wondered what others thought.

Also, how do I become more aware of what the sort of universal types of coffee are? I guess I mean how single origin stuff will mostly be labelled as Sumatra or Ethiopia. I know that actual roast will differ by brand but I would like to be able to know how to find the specific styles I enjoy rather than being a pleb who gives a branded blend name for his favorite coffee when asked.

Fuck, these past two weeks, I decided to take the home roasting, burr grinding, pour over pills.

I can't go back. It's amazing how much you can control what notes come out and shit just by switching a few things here and there. It's also pretty zen, and takes barely any time at all to make a fantastic cup.

The coffee I roasted for this week has 1/2 lb of Ethiopian Guji-Dimtu. I was expecting a lot more chocolate, but it came out fruity, full, and tart.

Next week is going to be some beans from Guatemala, and then I'll be making some Peruvian-Cajamarca after that. If anyone has a recommendation for something really nice and chocolate-y, I'm all ears.

Side note: today, I ran out of my Guji beans, so I made a pour over with some preground coffee from Germany. It was undrinkable to me now, and I had to go to a local shop to get a blue mountain, which also wasn't as good as the stuff I made myself. I think my appreciation for coffee is going to keep skyrocketing from here on.

Real complex bush berries. Raspberry blackberry boysenberry etc with a hit of almost chocolately sweetness on the finish when I pull it right. In a pourover its just bright sweet berries. Full bodied but not overbearing. I go back and forth between the monte purple caturra and the LLG red bourbon black honey as my favorites. Think I paid at most $7.25 an lb for them. Should have gotten 20lbs of each.

What is /ctg/s thoughts on butter coffee? Is it just a meme? Would you drink it even if there’s no health benefit to it?

I tried it once at Whole Foods for pure curiosity. It wasn’t the worst thing I ever drank, and found it actually wuite creamy, but I’ve learned it’s not for those who drink hot coffee slowly. Shit gets congealed after awhile.

Other than that, I put it on the same level as pineapple on pizza: having a unique interesting taste, but not something I would love or hate.

Aeropress, 10g medium grinds in, start with 1:10 ratio (110ml), 90c water, stir for about 30 sec, press, dilute to taste with hot water.

For tuning:
It'll probably be a bit under-extracted (not to be confused with overdiluting after) so up the water you use during the brew whilst keeping the final volume the same. Lighter roasts do better with higher water temp cause they're harder to extract and vice versa, fresher coffee takes longer to bloom, so wait longer to press if it gives off lots of CO2.

Agreed, v60 makes better coffee but you really want as much thermal mass in the cone as possible. You could get away with it in a size 01 v60 but I wouldn't bother.

Isn't the bottom opening diameter of V60 size 01 the same as that of 02?

>> No.15034112

>>15033991
Yes they do.

When you use less grounds, you're more likely to push fines to the bottom of the filter because your agitating grounds closer to the cone tip. Compounding on that, you fill up less of the cone, so your spout ends out farther from the surface of the bed, which increases agitation. Having a smaller cone lets you get closer and just barely lay the water over initially. I know this is getting super pedantic but fines in the base are a major factor, especially without having the extra weight from more water to force it through. Also a smaller cone absorbs less heat from your water, again, more significant when you have less total water. Hopefully this explains why things always seem to go wrong when you brew small batches in a v60 and why I don't bother with it.

My first cup of coffee was pretty sour and undrinkable Ethiopian using a flair/C40 I bought second hand at the beginning of our full lockdown, and after 5 months, Im consistently pulling great shots of sweet Harars, Kenyans and columbians and my palette is getting better at detecting subtle notes in different coffee beans. But Ive got a problem now. My family keeps pestering me to make them coffee every few days, because the good coffee shops are closed and apparently mines better, but I cant be bothered anymore, and I dont want them to touch my equipment. I only got a Flair and a C40 because I thought I was only going to make coffee for myself and maybe a friend, and it was cheap but good quality gear that can perform as great as the more expensive machines once youve mastered it. But Ive underestimated how my family would react to my hobby. If I knew, I would have gotten a setup far more better at making consecutives shots without my arm breaking. But I dont think theres semi automatic machines that has flow control like the Flair or Robot under 1000 AUD.

I think people were lured in by the lattes and shit like that. I dunno, man. It worries me that people would buy that machine for "convenience" when they only save 15 seconds if they're brewing for themselves, and actually lose time if they're brewing for multiple people. I tried not to roast it too hot since I was using a cast iron pan. It was probably about 5 minutes to the first pop, and then I roasted it another 2 minutes after that (without hearing a second pop). These times are fairly similar to my usual roasting times, except I'd usually roast until the second pop.

Everything I roasted after this was done in a stainless steel bowl, so this was my only time using a flat pan, and I'll be moving to a popcorn maker now.
