>govt says plant and bug patties are now legally hamburgers

European lawmakers said Friday that plant-based products that do not contain meat, including veggie burgers, soy steaks and vegan sausages, can continue to be sold as such in restaurants and shops across the European Union’s 27 countries.

Farmers who produce meat and milk generally don't want plant-based versions to be called anything similar. Some in the US tried to make it so plant milk had to have an unappetizing name though I don't remember what it was. It's not supporting the label being used misleadingly, just saying that you can call it a veggie burger instead of having to call it veggie slop.

>“Consumers are in no way confused by a soy steak or chickpea-based sausage, so long as it is clearly labeled as vegetarian or vegan,” the group said in a statement. “Terms such as ‘burger’ or ‘steak’ on plant-based items simply make it much easier for consumers to know how to integrate these products within a meal.”

So in other words, they still would have to call it a plant burger, instead of just labeling it as a hamburger.

It was being called almond milk 700 years ago because it was meant to be an alternative to animal products during holidays when they weren't allowed. I don't think it's a suitable permanent replacement for real milk but I'm not confused by the wording and I don't get upset over it.

I'm not even a vegan. I just don't see the point in getting angry over it. I don't understand it either. Probably liability and the West's new trend of catering to every individual problem at the loss of the collective.

Last year my daughter's school had a desert day where every kid brought in something to share. She loves baking, so made a couple dozen red velvet cupcakes from scratch. When I picked her up later she told me her teacher had thrown them all in the trash because they weren't "store bought". Principal told me they were unsafe because "the ingredients aren't listed so might have put other students at risk".

I'm honestly surprised kids can still bring any food to school instead of being force fed the latest Sysco slop.

How is the industry protected when it's just a few giant cooperation's that are protected by the government? And is it really protected or just heavily subsidized? You do know there are farmers who actually found MORE success in becoming independent from government subsidies than when they were dependent upon them?

Like, do you really feel protected as a small scale dairy farmer?

Idk man, sounds like you don't know shit about how business works. I'm guessing you don't do any real business. Other than, at best, working as a retarded pawn at a souless cubicle job.

>how is it protected
>if it’s made up of 15 monopolies
15 and monopoly don’t go together
>and 10 of them close, that’s it for the dairy industry
Ah, so you’re completely retarded
> sounds like you don't know shit about how business works. I'm guessing you don't do any real business.
Ah, so now you’ve graduated to projecting!

Okay, nigger. The dairy industry is protected and subsidized, its protected by the FDA shilling the fuck out of dairy products for like 60 years and it’s subsidized directly. Let me now explain supply and demand. The demand for beef big. The supply big. If 10 giant monopolies shut down, the supply would drop like a rock and the demand would stay the same. There would be a new boom in dairy/cattle farmers to fill the supply vacuum, and the price of beef would be unstable for a few years at most.
I know this might be tough for someone who’s only taken a few months of high school biology, but the economy is an ecosystem. It maintains itself through a natural order of supply and demand, similarly to how every other species exists. If there’s too many rabbits (supply), the demand (coyotes/wolves/eagles) increases. Only totalitarian governments and the ecosystem itself are able to affect it, and while sudden disasters can cause instability in the economy, it will maintain itself as long as a certain level of “healthiness” is maintained.

Actually the government does the opposite, what’s happening is that big companies are buying out the little ones. This leads to a loss in market diversity, a loss in choice, and a loss in consumer conscientious.
Let’s imagine all dairy/beef is controlled by one company. They control all the supply, and demand can be assumed to be constant. This means the company controls the price, the quality, and the supply overall. The consumer, here, has literally no choice.
Now, let’s just think about current year. The consumer has the choice to pick cheaper or more expensive, organic or grass fed, etc etc. This COULD be the choices if a monopoly takes over, but even still the “grass-fed” and other claims for a high price point would still be done with the bare minimum change to company costs. Also, the company could just say “lol fuck that shit”.

The only way to make independent beef/dairy farming a thing across the entire country (and, ill bite, the entire world) is for beef farmers and the consumers of beef to only shop locally produced animal products. I.e., every city with arable land and a desire to eat beef/chickens needs to independently farm it’s own beef/chickens. This would create a lot more jobs, free up a lot of land being wasted on industrial style farms, and probably minimize the ecological effects of farming cows by thinly spreading the pollution. Unfortunately, small businesses and the like are typically not allowed to exist in the US because small business means small taxes. Also, consumers are retards who only wanted cheap shit and didn’t realize what it would do to our world 60 or 80 years down the line.

See I don't think you are the guy from before. This makes way more sense. I'm not a fan of the label "small farm" Since a farm can be relatively large but still be tiny compared to the hyper industrialized megafarms.
Like 100 years ago having 2000 chickens was considered massive, but now with farms that will have up to 2 million birds at once that's a baby farm.

I agree that small businesses have been heavily suppressed. But with consumer knowledge they can find their way around it. For example my 1/4 beef (that has lasted me months and I have barely put a dent in it) could not have been shipped across state lines because it came from a small processor. No USDA inspection, no international shipping.

The beef cost me about as much as 3 nice steak dinners, for those who are bitching about cost. A little less than 350 for 90 lbs of beef (about 3.88 cents per lb of someone's personal cow, raised much better than an industrial beef).

But people have to do their research. They are so obsessed with convenience and question the system that they are in.

I decided the best solution for myself was to get my own livestock, so on top of the beef I have a second chest freezer full of duck. I plan on also getting a cow or 6 too, and learning how to slaughter and butcher it myself, only really using a facility to chill the meat (maybe even avoiding that)

People cannot even comprehend how to shop for certain things outside of a supermarket. They literally have no idea. They have been indoctrinated into depending solely on the cooperate oligarch system. They believe we cannot be independent the same way people 150 years ago believed we couldn't travel to space or send letters faster than you could write them.

Yes, I am a different person with a keen interest in the disestablishment of factory farming.
Personally, I think every single person with the space should own a chicken coop and a vegetable garden as a bare minimum. This puts emphasis on where your food comes from, avoids many of the practices that cause environmental concerns, avoids many of the practices that cause safety concerns, saves individuals a ton of money, and most importantly PUTS THE PRODUCTION OF FOOD INTO THE CONSUMER CONSCIENTIOUS.
I believe that the only feasible way for the “modern human” to evolve from this state, as you said, of dependence and dysphoria from real life and life’s facets (need for food, need for safety, need for society) is to start small with home food production. Producing and consuming your own food is humbling and makes you think about what you are, where you come from, and how you and your children will carry on. Modern shops take you as far from this idea as possible, they take you directly into the “what can I buy here and now” with all their sales and bullshit product placement.

I think one of the most dangerous rabbit holes a consumer could go down to destroy factory farming and industrial agriculture as a whole is to ask themselves when they go to the supermarket "can I produce this?"

The united states has systematically raised and produced a citizen who is the organic equivalent to a ford assembly line. Highly specialized to do one thing and one thing only. It's okay to have a skill at something, but people these days are absolutely useless. For gods sakes most americans cant even cook from scratch (I'm still trying to learn how to bake bread, which by this age I should have already long learned from my mother or grandmother!)

Walking down the path of self sufficiency ha been the best decision of my life. People have no idea what they are missing. I'm not super rich and I have little to no experience in growing and raising food aside from this year. It's just instinct and a bit of help and imagination.

If we could get people to do this more often, I'm not even saying destroy the cities, but if 5% of people went back to farming instead of our current dwindling 1%, imagine the dramatic increase of food quality just due to competition alone!

People say I'm unrealistic, but if we have the internet and horseless carriages, why the fuck is having a better food culture in the united states so out there as a concept?!
