Lot of us here it seems from the Washington D.C. area.

What are your secret spots and faves?

This isn't DC per se but I had a great meal at Out of the Fire cafe in Donegal, PA in the laurel highlands on a recent trip.

Feel free to post picks from the mid-atlantic in general. What are your favorite dishes to order to go/delivery/curbside pickup during covid endtimes?

NOVAfag here. Alexandria has really good hispanic restaurants, like Tacos El Costalilla, El Paso, Dona Azcuena Puperseria. First two are mexican, Dona Azcuena sells salvadoran food, mostly pupusas.
Barnside Diner is really good too. Its a small diner on Little River Turnpike. Really good omelets and waffles. Annandale has plenty of korean restaurants. ChiMc chicken is great, but they cook your food fresh right as you order it, so it takes awhile to get your food.
Oh, Chadwicks in Old Town is great too. But it's a fancy place. So you should only go with at least one other person, and you don't have to be dressed formal or anything but its not a casual place so just keep that in mind. Also Hard Rock Cafe in Old Town is good too, although I'm not sure if its a chain or not.
Then for chain restaurants, Quickfire Hibachi is a good japanese place, they give you a lot of food and its really good. Paisano's Pizza is better than national chains. Also Roy Rogers is the most underrated fast food place ever. Its really good and it makes me sad that there's only like 50 in existence and they're all in the mid-atlantic area.

Tippy's? Didn't know they were still around, but looking at those NOVA location menus... yep, that's it. The College Park joint, which was renamed Terrapin Tacos at some point, had the best dive tacos ever. wat?
I'm 20 minutes from the edge of the city (Chevy Chase) and ~35-45 into downtown DC (union station) maybe longer if I were to go in rush hour, but that's not bad at all.

I'm 5 minutes from a metro station and if it were bad traffic into the city, the metro will get me to the edge of the district in 30 minutes and downtown in 40-45.

Saving $1000+/month on my rent is worth it.

>> No.14873975

Yeah and most people commute during rush hour so it is an hour each way or more.

>I'm 5 minutes from a metro station

yeah and then you have to wait for a train and hope it isn't full and that the whole system is not delayed and then you have to get from your destination station to the office itself eating up massive amounts of time each way

its cheap for a reason

if it were desirable to live there, it would be more expensive

>I'm 20 minutes from the edge of the city (Chevy Chase)

useless number lol since you aren't going just to the edge of the city

time is money

>> No.14873985

i'm at the end of the line, the trains start here, they literally can't be full.

You aren't really close to anything in Gaithersburg. It is cheap because you have to drive a lot to get anywhere basically. Most people who live in the DC suburbs (outside of fake virus tiem) tend to commute to DC every day during rush hour.

You are tethered to your car and can't really walk anywhere easily.

Lmao better than being a moron that lives in DC without a car, or worse a cuck that lives in DC with a car and has to find parking for it.

Unless you're wealthy enough to live in a VERY nice part of the district, I just don't get the appeal. I am close enough to go to DC for anything I actually care to do (concerts, shows, museums, dining, etc) and far enough away that I don't have to deal with tourists or DC traffic unless I want to.

Not to mention I enjoy heading up to Baltimore and Columbia for dining as well, why would I want to restrict myself to JUST the district when there is so much good shit in the area as a whole?

I guess if we get our highspeed rail link between DC and Baltimore you could make an argument for that, but at the moment you're basically stuck in DC proper, or you're spending a stupid amount to uber outside the city and uber back in.

>> No.14874167

but that's kinda the point I don't really have to leave the city everything I need is here

I go with my dad (who has a car) to go hiking and that's all I need

uber gives you 20-40% off if you ride regularly it is crazy cheap compared to how much taxis used to be

and I get a neet discount on e bikes and e mopeds so they end up costing about 5-10 dollars an hour which really isn't bad either compared to the running cost of a car including gas and maint

>> No.14874202

>>14874167
I mean, I don't HAVE to leave the 4-5 block radius around me either, massive shopping center with tons of restaurants, bars, a target, grocery, store, banks, hair salon, movie theater, etc.

Is there more stuff to do within walking distance in DC? Of course, but I don't really want that, I ENJOY travelling to visit with friends in other parts of Maryland and Virginia, and DC.

I have a friend who like yourself, lives in capitol hill and doesn't own a car, and out of the friend group of ours, he gets left out the most often due to the lack of a vehicle. Unless he metros over to silver spring or shady grove, most of us aren't willing to make a drive down into the district JUST to pick him up to drive back out of the district to go to columbia or baltimore or whatever.

I'm glad you like living in DC anon, but try not to act SHOCKED that someone wouldn't want to live in the city. Especially with how much cheaper housing is outside of DC. It easily pays for car payments and then some.

Also 20009. I think someone else mentioned Astoria - try that. It brands itself as a bar but it's got really good sichuan food. Mapo tofu is good. They've got outdoor seating too

Tangentially related to restaurants: doesn't matter how good the restaurants are on a date, I still can't get over how bad the women are. It's like encountering a constant caricature of the modern western feminine ideal; soulless goals that center entirely around climbing the GS ladder along with hobbies that never extend far beyond the traditional foodie/netflix/wine trifecta. Speaking of wine: there are some passable wineries out in NOVA, though. Not great, not bad. Mostly the Virginia wine "industry" (if you can even call it that) seems like the kind of industry constantly describing itself as "up and coming" - except for the past 50 years. I've done Delaplane (good view but eh) and Bull Run (overrated) so far. Open to reccs

one of my friends is that chad. He has a few girls who he regularly fucks. All of them are in their late twenties and have good careers. They will just text him on a weekend evening asking if he wants to hang out. He'll go over their nice townhouse or luxury apartment. Fuck for a few hours and then leave. Repeat every weekend or so.

You know I am the peer of these women. I have a very nice townhouse and a lot of money in my bank account. Problem is my house looks like shit because I am not a soyboi faggot who gives a shit about such things. I am also considering changing my career because I do not care about the money but the purpose of the work. I actually intend on eventually buying some property in west virginia and working from home for the rest of my days.

This is definitely a wife desert and hopefully I will find a good wife once I leave this god forsaken land.

It's really interesting to hear about this divide. Seems like both genders here feel the same way, but for entirely different reasons. Men dislike the slutty professional ideal women here seem to be fixated on; women dislike men who are just fucking around and don't want a long term relationship. Probably those former factors inform the latter. There's a lot of overlap between the two. I don't really see a way out myself, either. My industry is tied to the region, and it's fulfilling and I enjoy it a lot, but I can't see myself staying and voluntarily marrying one of these women here. No wonder people move out to the 'burbs.

Tosokjip in Annandale is pretty good home-style korean lunch food. It's kind of a hole in the wall type place. Cheap too, but not sure where you are / how far you're willing to drive. Byblos Deli in Cleveland Park is nice too. Cheap greasy greek food; big portions. Owner is somewhat shizo and will warn you about government implanted ID chips.
