My college dining hall was a cafeteria, and it was amazing. I gained 30 pounds though. Sometimes I'd just go there and eat and eat and eat. They had these mozzarella/balsamic/tomato/Spinach subs sometimes, I'd eat like four. And they had lemon meringue pie occasionally too, I once ate seven slices in one day. I never knew what it was like to be truly satisfied in the quantity, quality, and variety of food I had to eat until I got the unlimited meal plan in college. And I went from a thin person to a fatass. But the feeling of security was sublime.

Neighbor was a Golden Corral Manager until he died 2 years ago, he was closing up and was shot during a robbery.
He used to allow police/fireman in uniform/on duty to eat for free in the last hour before closing, helped keep the trash out at the end of the night. All on-duty police and fire ate at half price all day. Regional Corporate made him stop, he was killed 45 days later.
He used to give me free passes and I ate there for lunch (really my dinner, after I got off work) every day but Sunday. Got pretty fat, I would eat until I was sure I would vomit if I bent over. List a lot of weight now that I have had to buy food. Golden Corral was my only food source gor almost 10 years.

Coronaviruses aren't spread through food. The only way you'd get it from a buffet any more than any other establishment is from touching surfaces, which they're supposed to clean. Even if they don't, just avoid touching your eyes or nostrils. Coronavirus won't go into your system if it goes through your mouth via food.

Fuckin love a good buffet. So glad my local chinese buffet opened up again. I've eaten there three times in the past month or so. They have caution tape between every other booth, plastic wrap around the food, you have to wear a mask while you're up getting the food, and they dish it up for you. Not that big of a deal really. I swear everything is tasting better than it used to. I'm not complaing.

I like local southern buffets, if they don't have a huge tray of macaroni n cheese or banana pudding n nilla wafers I walk out

You can get a variety of foods for the same price at a restaurant, and it's going to be an actual variety because the food will actually have flavor whereas, at a buffet, pretty much everything tastes the fucking same because the food is all bland as fuck. There's also no buffet where the food is a 6/10, let alone a 7/10.
No, the real reason people go to buffets is to pig out on trash. The only thing buffets offer over real restaurants is the biggest quantity of food for your buck, except you don't need all that food (and your body doesn't want all that food). You can go there to gorge and eat way more food than you should. People leave buffets feeling sick because they always overeat to "get their money's worth." But it's not an enjoyable experience when you're feeling ill and vomiting because you had to stuff your face full of terrible food just to justify going to a buffet from an economical perspective.
If you go to a real restaurant, you can eat food that is always going to be better quality than any buffet, and you're going to walk away feeling sated instead of bloated. You're going to have an actual enjoyable dining experience. There is absolutely no good reason to go to a buffet.

That's why I generally only try to go to a buffet within an hour of them first opening. I really like the concept of a buffet, but even before all this coronavirus stuff I realized that they can be pretty unsanitary. Always hate being at a buffet and seeing someone blow their nose at the table and then not go to the bathroom to wash their hands after.

Kind of hope this makes buffets take the cleanliness aspect more seriously even after it's over, or maybe we start seeing automated buffets that can keep things clean.

I wish these were still around. Used to go with my grandparents all the time and have fond memories of it.

One time I went to a Chinese buffet & put a mountain of chow mein & crab legs on my plate, it seriously must've weighed 5+ pounds. I sat down & just as I was about to start eating, one of the employees said "ohhhh so good prate for big boy yum", I pushed the plate off the table & left without paying. Fucking cunt bug people. Sure I'm over 400 but that's no reason to Target your customers

I don't know if it's still running giving "these troubling times" but there is or was a good one in little Korea on 32nd between 5th and Broadway that was pretty damn clean. 99% of the time I was the only whitey there but they left me alone as long as I was clean even years ago. They'd toss any weirdo looking creep that showed up, even a Korean. That place is also how I learned about Yamasa soy sauce which I thought interesting, they had the sauce in little packets for customers, a Japanese soy sauce in a Korean place.
