Regular Appleton is my cheap go to aged rum for mixing. I also like Plantation Dark.

I know, I still prefer it to diplomatico reserva, which I find too sweet, and the Appleton estate 12 year old which smells a little bit of acrylate. Organic chemists never forget a smell. At the moment I am drinking pic related.

It’s nice, has a bit of a kick and you can tell that it’s been aged, you get the taste of the wooden barrels as you do with whiskey. It is drier than most; drier than the Appleton 12, but less complex in flavours.

I've always found Mount Gay to be the best of the bigger brands available at standard prices.
Eclipse is the best of bottom of the market offerings, and Black Barrel and the XO are great and decently priced.

Personal preference, but I would go with cheap bourbon, but I'm in the US, so cheap bourbon is cheap. The spices don't jive well with most mixers.

i only really drink in the fall winter and the last decent rum i had was Pampero Anniversario, but I dont want to buy the same thing over and over just yet. Is there something in the same price range that is closely comparable flavor wise?
