steel reserve is malt liqour. that basically means they take beer and add a bunch of extra sugar to it so there is more to ferment.

I think they add more sugar to speed up the brewing process and produce more alcohol. The resulting brew has higher ABV, but it's the kind of alcohol that's produced through the fermentation of simple sugars, rather than complex grains which you're used to.
