So I'm new when it comes to Food and Cooking. I'm a firefighter, and one of the main skills we have to have is taking turns cooking. So far I've got a few decent meals that the fellas like but when it comes to steak I'm pretty terrible so I'm trying to cook at home more.

Here are my questions regarding steak:
1. What are some good seasonings? And how do you know if you've "over" seasoned. I use garlic powder, salt, black pepper

2. I have an iron skillet, and a non stick pan. Which of these is best for cooking steak.

3. When cooking steak to get medium rare, how what would you recommend actually turning the stove burner on to?

I don't have access to my phone at the moment. I can tell you it's gas, and the skillet has been used before for bacon and some other meats, but nothing crazy.

It's not a requirement its just tradition that you take turns cooking at work. Some guys are cool with being terrible at it so they just end up not cooking and just doing the dishes. I'd like to be a cooking guy.

The seasoning you have is good. Montreal seasoning is good too. Iron skillet. I turn my oven on 500 F. and put my iron skillet in it while I let it heat up. When the oven is at temp, I put take the skillet out and sear the seasoned steak (just as is no oil or anything) for one minute per side then I put it in the oven for 2 to 2.5 minutes per side depending on how thick the steak is. Then I put a pat of butter on each steak while I let them rest. I like medium rare.

This whole post is Gold. Thank you! I've got oil but no butter.

>> No.14656612

1) use real garlic if you want garlic. basic salt/pepper and butter can still make for a good steek
2) You want to use the iron skillet. Get it pretty damn hot before putting the steek on
3) Every burner is different. You want a pretty good amount of heat coming out. Experiment. Have good steek.

If you aren’t good at cooking steak, you aren’t good at cooking steak. Man up and accept the fact that cooking meat solely on its own while making it appetizing is much more difficult than you previously believed. Resolve yourself to cook things that aren’t “manly” but are still delicious, such as creating your own pasta sauce, making a soup or stew, or slopping up some curry.

>Cook till internal temp to desired doneness
Congrats you're now an expert steak cooker.
If you want it to be completely mindless buy a sou vide cooker and just sear the outside on a very hot pan.

okay, just don't use the oil, you won't need it then. The steaks for that method should be well marbled. Like a ribeye. The fat in the meat should be good enough.

Salt, pepper and rosemary (fresh is better) is a winning combo for steak, in my opinion. Could throw some garlic, if you want, but not necessary, for me.

It’s easy to cook a fucking piece of meat, but doing it right? Doing it better than someone with years of experience? Good luck, if you aren’t naturally talented. There are exceptions, but most people aren’t naturals.

You do let it rest after cooking, at least 5 mins. I use oil for the pan as it goes higher in temperature without smoke, but I put a slice of butter on top when my steaks awaits being served.

Take the steaks out 15 minutes before cooking. Salt and pepper on the steaks, both sides. Don't be shy with it. Heat up pan. Melt butter. Throw in some rosemary and thyme. Smash some garlic cloves. Throw it in the pan. Put the steaks in. Cook them until they're done.

Anyone who isnt a complete retard can cook a decent steak after at most a few tries. Millions of videos exist on cooking steak like there are on building a PC, learning python or homebrewing apple cider. BBQing most meat is kiddie shit.
