This is because evolution. We used to burn way the fuck more calories with daily living, it was super hard to eat too much during the vast majority of evolutionary history so we evolved mechanisms to encourage eating, and didn't evolve mechanisms to discourage mild overeating both because it was so rare and because its effects are pretty minor until late in life when people then were mostly dead from other factors anyways
It was extremely rare for people to live long enough that being fat actually mattered for their health and evolutionary fitness. Even now it is mostly a cosmetic thing, being mildly overweight slightly increases your chance of dying as a middle aged person with adult children, so super minor effect on your evolutionary fitness

People who are fat, how much of their diet do you really think they make? Lots of fat people often have fast foods, consume sugar filled drinks and foods, and dont exercise. I spend bout 40 bucks every two weeks for my food (1 person). How much do you think theyre spending for their fast food and junk food? It's 100% cheaper to make your own food than to buy it. Fat people arent really making their own burgers with 20% fat - theyre buying it from mcdonalds! And that money racks up. They arent going to put in effort to learn how to cook, much less spend time to cook.

And if apples were still cheaper than biscuits, do you really think theyll still buy em? No, because processed foods with sugar taste better. They wwere probably raised with an unhealthy diet too so theyve continued this into adulthood

it's true that individual fat people are fat because of some personal failing, but it's also true that the system somehow is exploiting that failing. we didn't magically get a higher percentage of people with low willpower and self control these past few generations. people with low willpower and self control have always existed and yet we haven't had these obesity rates at any other point in history. some pacific islands have obesity rates of 90%. the problem isn't just with individuals

No, fat in your diet isn't making you fat.
Soda however is 150 calories per 12 oz.
Alcohol is 100 calories per 40% shot.
A beer can be up to 1/3rd of your caloric recommended intake if you're a short woman.

You can live on twinkies and still be a twink, it's all about how much of it you eat and how active you are.

I work on a hog farm, play beat saber, and exercise regularly, I can eat 3000+ calories a day, and I weight 150lbs at 5'9"

Calorie counting, and figuring out how many calories you use a day, should be a basic life skill they teach in school. I lost 100 lbs at one point, and it was easy once I learned how shit works and stopped making excuses.

This is partially true. Healthier food is definitely more expensive and much less accessible in low-income areas. I think there’s also a major lack in education on how to eat healthily. My dad was a teacher in south side Chicago and he said there were kids who literally didn’t even know where milk came from because they just weren’t exposed to that information.
Another thing is time. It takes time, energy, knowledge, and money to cook food that’s not just bullshit. Without all these, it’s likely that you’re either “cooking“ shitty frozen food or just eating McDonald’s. But it’s absolutely a truth that the poor are fatter and eat less healthily in the US and other Anglo countries. Scarcity is not the issue. Money and a lack of education are.

How do 1st world countries have a food education problem when countries with pretty much no education don't? You don't think that the destruction of the nuclear family, women in the workforce (therefore not cooking or teaching their kids life skill), and decadent lifestyle that doesn't require a person to do more than type on a keyboard from their bed if they don't care to lift a finger are to blame? Almost everyone in the first world has a smart device and consistent free internet access (libraries and businesses and many parks and communities) plus whatever plan they are inevitably on/paying for. It's an endless encyclopedia of human knowledge where you can find information on budget healthy food and extreme budget gardening. All a person has to do is look it up. Rice, beans, potatoes, small amounts of inexpensive meat like chicken and cheap ground beef and pork, eggs, milk, and some kind of leafy green can sustain people incredibly well. Do these low income "uneducated" people who have terrible diets want to trade in cola, chips, shitty cookies, their smokes, and beer in exchange for a healthy and affordable lifestyle? Ask one of them. They know they are consuming unhealthy things. They will admit they don't even look at the produce and don't care to put 30-45 minutes into a basic meal. Most of the time they recall basic health and nutrition education from school (white poors, blacks probably never made it that far) and choose to ignore it. Tons of them went to a 2 or 4 year school, and plenty that I've met are health care workers including single mom nurses or nurses with deadbeat husbands. They know what their patients should be doing and still scarf down vending machine food and do all the wrong things. What is the cure for this????

You can literally slop a bunch of shit into a crockpot, leave it, and then eat it. Cooking is as complex as you want it to be.

Cooking something edible isn't rocket science, especially in the internet age. Billions of recipes online and millions of videos to follow.

80% lean (20% fat) beef is $1.99/lb on sale.

Pre-covid prices from Costco I used to use as a benchmark for if sales were half decent in Ontario:
>boneless skin less chicken breast: 11.99/kg
>lean ground beef: 6.99/kg
>pork tenderloin: 8.80/kg
Prices have gone up by about 30% since then. Sales used to be found for maybe 40% off those prices if you shopped around.

Point being, no, meat is not that cheap everywhere. More regulation, refrigeration, shipping costs make it more expensive than other countries I'm guessing. Same goes for fresh produce. People think losing weight is some kind of magic trick where you need to eat like a health guru. No you just need to fucking eat LESS. It's true for sure. When I lived in England, I would spend the equivalent of $15 on groceries because there was so much ready-made crap and snacks available for £1-2. Sure, if you buy the right ingredients then you could make cheaper meals, but if you're a poorshit living from paycheck to paycheck then you're probably going to shy away from the upfront costs involved and decide that you'd rather down £1 bags of store-brand bacon rashers than live on variations of rice and beans.

Absolutely not true.
A large percentage of the American population don't even have access to a Walmart, there's plenty of urban 'food deserts' where you can go miles and see only corner stores and fast-food joints.
If you're poor and don't own a car then there's absolutely no chance you're gonna walk several miles to find fresh produce simply for the privilege of making more work for yourself

Are you actually fucking retarded?
Do know how big American cities are? Do you actually think anyone is gonna travel several miles by foot from whatever urban hellscape they live in to go find a supermarket?
The problem isn't 'access', of course anyone can technically access raw produce if they're willing to go out of their way, the problem is convenient access, access that doesn't involve spending 10-20 times as much times to go shopping as it would take to walk down to the corner store, because regardless of how 'right' it would be, no one is gonna fucking do that.
>and tell me how succhini, potatoes and onions are more expensive than burgers, pizza and hot dogs
And you seriously underestimate just how cheap processed garbage and fastfood is in America, especially factoring in the upfront costs of home cooking it is simply far cheaper to live on crap than it is to cook for yourself, at least if you don't intend to live on nothing but rice and lentils.

I've never really understood this argument. This would only make sense if people were paid small amounts, frequently. At least back when I was poor enough to work two jobs, I got paid monthly. And after I wrote the checks for rent and utilities, I went straight to the supermarket and spent most of what I had left on bulk food. I imagine this goes doubly so for those that live in remote areas, and have to drive an hour to get to a supermarket.

So where does this idea come from that poor people can't afford bulk food if there's only one time of the month, maybe two, that they actually have money in their pockets?

No, I think its more likely that people stay poor because they load themselves up with credit card debt, buy things all month long they don't need, bottom out their account with the minimum payment each month, and then pretend like they can't spend $30 to buy more pasta than they could eat in a month.

Gee I wonder. I went to school in France for a year and there was no mention of nutrition and no health or nutrition classes at school. But people actually cook at home there and show their kids what's appropriate to eat and how to cook it. These kids parents, mostly their moms, taught them to discipline themselves around sweets, not to overly stuff themselves, to eat your greens, use high quality ingredients, not to buy prepackaged. They happen to have a strong food culture to back them up in a way that the US doesn't. The immigrants were the fattest ones even though they got the same education! Barely any French were fat. The total destruction of a traditional family tears apart healthy family traditions like balances, properly cooked meals in favor of prepackaged garbage. It's just empty calories, but because the sorts of grains and whatnot have changed over the years, there was a point where most bread, which was actually made in a bakery and not some bleached shit pulled off some supermarket shelf, was actually healthy. Hence why it's still a staple part of our diets. We haven't adjusted culinarily despite a gross nutritional void.

Hmm. Maybe it's because cookies taste better than apples. Especially shitty modern apples that are grown for appearance instead of taste.

Junk food has been engineered and overprocessed to the point it's basically a drug now, while at the same time, produce has been getting blander and less appealing. It's amazing to me that society continues to say "just eat healthy" when every other store in America sells cheap, unlimited, crack. And it's impossible to completely avoid taking this crack, especially in childhood, making it hard to avoid addiction.

I can only guess it's sheer peer pressure that keeps people thin. You can eat delicious foods at every hour of the day if you want to, I don't blame people for doing that if there's not a huge pressure not to.

We have to acknowledge this to work on the obesity problem. How things have changed to the point that a lot of people just can't help themselves anymore. Otherwise it's like telling poor people to stop being poor, or the mentally ill to just stop being crazy. It's an ivory tower mindset that's not going to help.
