And they complained online, not from within, which is a violation of the contract. They should be completely fired. If they had improved the numbers, they should have just kept persisting right up until contract renewal for a little more or a lot more, whichever it may be, but it's not racist for their employer not to reap the new profit instead. If they valuable and should have a new increase if income was going up, they could take their talent when their contracts ended and set up an independent life again if they weren't prohibited for a time. My sibling, a physician can't work for competitors for like a year after quitting, so no telling what kinds of contracts they sign. If the employer ends the contract early you can get rid of those clauses oftentimes.
BA should have, to be generous and kind, should have increased "hazard pay" during the shutdown, but there's still a 3yr bit of uncertainty in the economy and the future of CondeNast for one, corporations aren't as sweet as say home businesses.

There's no problem with the contract.
There is a problem with the next pay negotiation. Because now that you've been there for a bit you can measure your contribution relative to your peers and your pay relative to your peers. It's not even about the money anymore it's about dick measuring.

If it was about money you'd realize that there is a hierarchy and you need to wait for someone above you to leave before you have a shot at moving up; therefore it is more prudent to switch companies and enter into a higher paying position that way.

I would much prefer a title system where (despite the job being the same) you can say someone is payed more because their title. Especially since that usually forces some level of performance bench marking or the promise of a path to that title and therefore pay.
Of course I wouldn't go so far as to adopt the government system where duration of employment = pay and there are hard qualification barriers (like phds) when you're already equivalent via experience.
