what absolutely unnecessary kitchen gadgets do you like to employ?

for me it's the infrared thermometer

those are super handy though, particularly for figuring out exactly how hot a pan is without getting anything extra dirty.

Kitchen Mandolin. Everyone should learn basic kitchen knife skills, there are some things that a mandolin isn't shaped for, mandolins are annoying to clean, and they really aren't faster than just using a knife once your kitchen skills are high enough.

All that said, I just like the feel of cutting with a mandolin.

Mandoline slices are not consistent without skill.
The julienne cutters are convenient for when you sorta care, but not really.

The absolutely useless device is a fancy cutter. Yes, it does a job, yes, it does that job better than most other methods (exception - mandoline fancy blade, rotating the 'tato), but the job itself is of limited use.
Literally just for waffle fries and salad buffet style crinkle cut carrot strips.

I used to own one of these. I ended up selling it because it was so stupid. I also owned a deep fryer which I never used except for arancini, so I sold that once I got an LC dutch oven.

Looks stupid indeed.
But, I've seen some prepper videos, mommy videos, where they are making bags of "crock pot meal kits," burritos, waffles and those kind of things using $10 devices, and wrapping for the freezer. And, I'm like geez, I guess for them to chitchat on the phone and run items through mini irons by the dozens makes the throwaway student dorm devices not seem so expensive. I am not sure if they are all planning for when they're pregnant and really tired, or they work 12hr hospital shifts. I dunno.

Using my ordinary toaster for the english muffins, I did used to microwave from a custard cup layered raw egg+slice of deli ham+slice of cheese while the bread toasted. It wasn't any frozen crap. Pyrex custard cup can even be prepped the night before, even a sprinkle of herbs or pepper on top of the raw ingredients, and covered in plastic wrap and then, just moved to the microwave (vent the plastic wrap). MockMcMuffin in like 3 minutes.

I like these because it helped me learn what temps my stove goes to at which settings. also helped me check how high my oven goes. it sets to 500 but I can get it to about 540 by waiting

isnt this obsolete when you need the internal temp of your food

>> No.14516194

>>14515929
Internal temps are the one thing it doesn't handle. It's great for checking pan temps (for matte pans anyway, SS is iffy), spot checking temps in the oven/fridge,and it's the only reasonable way to directly check temp when shallow frying. The fact that you have nothing to wash makes it even better.

I use an infrared thermometer for brewing (coffee/tea/beer), and also for deep frying. I guess it's unnecessary because I owned a couple probe thermometers before I bought it...but that's kind of like saying indoor plumbing is unnecessary when you can always just walk a couple miles down to the river.

I sliced my fingertip off with one of these. It never healed back correctly since I threw away the piece of skin, lol. The bandaid+superglue I wrapped it in melded to the platelets, and that was also painful to remove. My dad ripped it off and it re-opened the whole wound.
