>tuesday is the new friday
Did you do anything nice for yourself food and cooking related this evening? I made a burger, and picked up some Taco Bell – for good measure. I’ve never considered myself much of a skeptic, at least not in the modern sense of the term, but I’m not letting myself get all hot and bothered by these rumors of an upcoming menu overhaul. In any case, any excuse to get some Taco Bell is a good excuse in my book.

Two 7 layers was my go-to order circa ~1995, but I rarely order them anymore because I don't like how literally they take the "layer" part of the equation. It's always, "one bite of sour cream", "one bite of lettuce and rice", "one bite of tomatoes with a little bean action", "one bite of guacamole and a shit ton of tortilla", etc. I did a little experiment earlier to see how much it would cost to recreate a 7 just using modifications, and was honestly surprised that it's only 30 cents more. I'll try it once it's off the menu, but I feel like it wont be the same, since I'm pretty sure they use different sized tortillas.

You just know something is wrong in the world when you have to resort to Tito’s – America’s Grey Goose. It was on sale, and had a $2 off coupon attached (which I admittedly didn’t even see until the checkout person scanned it), so obviously it’s the best choice compared to the $18-$19 handle shelf when all the Seagram’s has gone away. It still feels like throwing money away buying a handle of vodka in the $20 price range, but when you’re out of options outside of driving to a second store for a single item you just have to take the hit and accept it. Meanwhile, I’ll gladly buy virtually any bottle of Lost Abbey, even though I mostly stick to hard liquor these days.

I’m honestly just a little disappointed with myself for consistently forgetting to order these tacos al fresco. They’re practically made for al fresco. They have nacho cheese between the two layers, so getting rid of the 0.2 oz of shitty dry shredded cheese isn’t any kind of loss. They have a hard shell on the inside so that the soft shell won’t get soggy from the pico. And they have a soft shell on the outside to keep the hard shell from shattering into a million pieces. It’s still a stupid amount of tortilla, but there’s a case to be made from an engineering standpoint.

>why don't you ever get a crunchwrap
Because it’s a terrible item? I rarely order anything over $4 to begin with, and the crunchwrap is almost half the size of the dollar menu crunchwrap I threw together earlier, and has nothing unique or interesting inside. I don’t dislike what’s included, but even if you disregard the bad value, it’s just a really poor design. The worst thing you can get at Taco Bell is the end of a burrito that’s folded over on itself and is nothing but dry tortilla. The crunchwrap is designed like some stupidly large dim sum; it’s folded over on itself on purpose, so every bite is multiple layers of tortilla - no matter how you approach it. On top of that, it’s a fucking circle, which just seems designed to piss off anyone who actually likes to dip their Taco Bell in fire sauce. In other words, it’s designed for children, and unfortunately I am a full grown adult.

Thanks. There's definitely something off with the burger patty, though. I'm kind of in charge of the kitchen, but decided to fuck off for the reopening because I'm not interested in being a guinea pig and don't give a shit about throwing around my leverage to be NEET for 6 months. (There's going to be some hard conversations when I go back full time.) I've been shilling Laphroaig 10 for years. I don't think I introduced it to anyone or anything; I mean, it's pretty much the poster child for Islay, but I will admit that I haven't seen anyone else talking about how well it pairs with Taco Bell's dollar menu. I got heavy recommendations to try the Quarter Cask a couple years ago and I'm honestly still on the fence. I think the QC is more nuanced, but since I'm usually already intoxicated by the time I get home, I think I just like how the 10 is more straight forward.
