I wonder if the attitude toward this is very different between Americans and Europeans. Or at least some Europeans.
Eating out seems to be generally cheaper and more common in the US, is why I'm thinking this.
I have a pretty good income but it's still rare for me to eat at a restaurant. So when I do go I will probably take a pic so I can post it on FB or in a chatroom or whatever and go "I went to an Italian place today" or whatever.
I doubt I'd bother doing that if I ate out several times a week.

Buy a camera you like and enjoy using (if you like and enjoy using your phone camera, that works too. I hate using my phone to take photos, so I opted to grab a Ricoh GRII. It's small, light and fits my needs perfectly. I have a lot of fun using it).
From there it's mostly just finding nice lighting, angles that work and making sure the right things are in focus. Take lots of photos, edit lots of photos (even the ones you don't like so much) and don't delete shit. Look back at your old work and measure your growth since then to motivate yourself.
Sorry I haven't got anything too technical to say, but that's what's worked for me.

Good food photography is like 90% lighting.
Spend some time actually reading about that or watch some videos about it on Youtube.
Don't run out and buy a load of expensive gear just yet either. You probably have a desk map or two that you can mess around with while you learn. Use a sheet of paper to bounce the light etc. etc.
Bounce the flash on your camera or cameraphone too. Straight-on phone flash always looks horrid, especially for food pics, but you can get decent results by bouncing the light off some white cardboard or something to soften and diffuse it.
Pic related obviously doesn't work for a phone but it should give you an idea of what I'm talking about. He just tore open the empty pack and put it over the on-camera flash. The light bounces and still hits the subject but it's softer and more diffused, and it's coming from further away from the lens.
You know how photos taken with flash on the phone sometimes look like cheap CGI? That's because having the flash really close to the lens eliminates shadows. It looks weird.

Oh, and before you spend a day moving around desk lamps and cutting cardboard, try putting your food near a window and see how that works.

Also; never ever go to /p/. Not even for a quick look. Don't do it.
