Did you perhaps acquire this through Walmart?

Heard a story that Walmart wanted the boxes to be shorter on a product, to better utilize shelf space, and the manufacturer changed the product a bit to make it happen. Not sure if new SKUs were created, but I thought that was a Walmart supply chain specific change.

People can do WHATEVER they like in their own homes. Meat, starch, veggies, dairy, crunchy toppings, whatever, it's nearly a balanced all in one meal, it's all good for them, filling a mood or a comfy craving or reliving some childhood memories, or even saving money. Fresh herbs, higher tier cheese, higher tier eggy durum pastas, etc.

> or in a box)?
Pasta will not be ideal:
Thinner, kind of porous noodles manufactured intentionally to be quick-boil for one pot skillet meals or just to come together in under 15-30mins for busy households. Probably eggfree noodles substituted for what would have been egg noodles, to keep that allergen off the labelling.
Not ideal sodium content, yeasty, umami MSG like extracts, in order to build more flavors. Many people wouldn't want those migraine triggers or overall daily sodium content if they have BP issues, or water or inflammatory diseases.

From the sauce packet to the noodles, it's likely that boxed "helper" kits may not have a subtle negative problem. Their lack of overall perfect individual components may not completely satisfy a person, and therefore, they might overeat their portions. There are deluxe editions with topping packet(s) so you don't need to kick it up a notch at home, but still :/ If the job is to have dinner taking no more effort than browning meat and reading labels in <10mins, 15mins simmer? It fits the bill. It's also pantry ready food that needs no more than a frozen block of hamburger.

Same, but I'm not sure it will ever happen.

Those McCormick spice packets usually range between $0.79 and $1.49 depending on sales and type. Those prices are just about the same as Hamburger Helper. I'm not sure the price could drop much further.

Practically speaking, it's still a deal at $1.49 which is the current price at Kroger. I bet you could go into a Sav-a-Lot or something and find them for something like $2/1.49.

I just find it embarrassing to have more than one of those in my cart, and it takes up too much space at home. I'd pay $1.50 for just the packet.

Better to just make keema matar or a picodillo with peas then add potatoes, carrots, and garbanzo beans to stretch it out on rice. It will be more filling and cheaper than cheese, pasta, and ground beef. Taste better, and actually healthy. Serve with flat bread (naan or tortillas). Cook leftovers with fried eggs on top for breakfast bowls. I buy a bunch of Italian sausage when it's on sale and freeze it so I can pop a few out to mix with ground beef.

The painful part is stocking up on the spices but once you've gotten a bunch of bulk spices going it's very cheap to cook with.

Or, just go full on hamburger mac n cheese. It's fucking delicious. I tend to keep box crap like hamburger helper around too for when life goes batshit busy. 20 mins and grate on some real cheese, freshly ground pepper, wala.

It's not lower. These are loss leader items when on sale or with coupons, which is routinely just a literal $1. Yes, it's not quite the size of a 75c storebrand 1lb box of pasta, but you're getting a sauce mix, dehydrated veggies, etc. There are in fact a lot of "junk food" poor people can buy that is less expensive than fresh foods.

Sure it's better to make food from scratch, esp in bulk, but a box of hamburger helper is always going to cost less than a carton of sour cream, or a block of cheddar combined with the pasta price. I get your point, but for poor people eating on $50/week (I couldn't do it), this is one of those pantry staples ready to go, requiring zero fresh ingredients (just frozen meat), and like a bag of yellow rice mix or zatarains jambalaya mix, it can be left alone for months. Now imagine a lot of people buy questionable ground beef in family packs that are on sale that tastes like shit when made into regular burgers, the Hamburger Helper is going to mask that shit taste. Good luck trying to do that yourself and keeping the kids all happy when you mix in a bunch of spices, there are def. going to be complaints, I mean you can probably use knorr stock cubes, salt and maybe some shit tomato sauce and pasta elbows and then let the little shits sprinkle grated cheese on top if they want individually. This is what I don't get, Hamburger Helper isn't going to win any awards and anything made from scratch will blow it completely out of the water but as far as instant pasta shit goes it's completely edible though pretty bland.

I make a variation called scum gullet. Ingredients:

4 lbs ground beef
2 lb pasta
1 lb American cheese
8 C water/broth
Salt
Pepper
Herbs
1 C ketchup

Brown beef. Do NOT drain (we need that flavor). Add the broth, ketchup, and pasta, bring to a boil. Drop the heat, simmer. Add the cheese til it's melted. Continue cooking until pasta has reached your desired consistency. Season.

Did you seriously include Germans in your enumeration? Germans learn from preschool about their country's history and the dangers of nationalism, and they are arguably the most humble and hard working people in the Western world. Contrast that with how Americans have to stand for the pledge in elementary school and learn a completely white washed version of their history, including how George Washington was a hero, as opposed to a genocidal maniac, and how the United States were always liberators and on the right side of every war. That's why so many Americans grow up with a superiority complex, despite being demonstrably more ignorant, obese, wasteful, entitled, etc.

Probably one of the best one-pot meals of all time. I dare you to name a better one.

I always have exactly four dishes to clean when I make it: a pot, wooden spoon, coffee cup, and fork. Washes up in just a few minutes with minimal scrubbing. I prefer a pot with hide sides to a skillet. You've got to stir it more frequently, but otherwise it works just fine.
