14330117 No.14330117 [Reply] [Original]

Subway’s grand plan to bring back the $5 footlong has fallen flat, The Post has learned.

America’s biggest restaurant chain on Tuesday told its franchisees that it would be ending its controversial offer to sell any two subs for $10 because the deal wasn’t increasing profits for mom-and-pop owners, who revolted against it from the start.

“While the summer promotion saw well above average consumer awareness, largely driven by our highest TV media weights since 2015, and the number of consumers taking advantage of the offer exceeded our expectations, we did not see enough incremental traffic to grow franchisee profits,” Subway said in the memo, a copy of which was seen by The Post.

Starting July 2, the $10-for-2 deal will only be available for customers who order through Subway’s app, the memo said.

Subway kicked off the promotion on June 16 by offering to sell any two footlong subs for $10, including its Big Philly Cheesesteaks, which normally cost $8.95. The deal, which was ushered in with splashy ads starring “One Call Away” singer Charlie Puth, was expected to last until Aug. 31.

But it was strongly opposed by many franchisees, who also declined to participate. They argued that while the $5 footlong promotion worked wonders to draw customers back in 2008, it was uneconomical given the rise in labor and food costs.

>> No.14330119

“So doing the two for $10, we made 52 more sandwiches for $58 less. Simple math says this is a bad idea,” a Florida franchisee recently wrote on the Subway franchisee blog.

Subway’s withdrawal is a black eye for CEO John Chidsey, who went all out to push the promotion as the coronavirus crushed sales, including by tapping Puth to participate in the company’s new ad campaign.

“It’s back, it’s back .. the good old days are back,” Puth sings in the ad, which Subway reps touted as the company’s biggest campaign since the popularity of Subway spokesman Jared Fogle, who was arrested for kiddie porn in 2015.

It's not worth any more than that. They give you a single layer of low quality meat, stale cheese, and two inches of off tasting lettuce.

They can't even compete in most of the South against publix. Half the subways closed down around here when publix took over. They give you a ton of meat and cheese for $8 with chips and a drink and it doesn't taste like plastic.

Subway is mediocre at best. I wish pic related were still around. A bit pricier than Subway, but the sandwiches tasted so much better (at least at my local franchise, whose manager ran it well). I also got coupons almost every week in the mail and there was a loyalty card.

Particularly in regards to places like Subway which is just getting shittier while prices go up.
Other chains can't raise prices too much more since everyone expects cheap for what they get.
They will need to go "premium" like fast casual chains to justify the price needed to stay in business, or else more and more franchisees will close up.

I'd like to see some data behind this marketing strategy. This era in industry is really sickening with wasted product, outsourced slave labor, and nonrepairable items. These are easily some of the failures of advanced capitalism.

imo everyone already knows fast food items are inexpensive. McD's sold most of their stuff on the dollar menu for years. I think the worst thing about the $5 ft long is that they doubled back on it. It's already a low quality product, but $5 was acceptable when you needed the convenience. If they draw people in, and people also buy other products in the deli, it is probably much more worthwhile. For many Subway franchises, people would solely come for that one deal, and therefore it came out as an increasing net loss due to inflation.

>Subway can't make a profit on selling paper-thin cheese and sawdust mache for $5
Unless they greatly restrict the non-frozen meats and vegetables they offer, I can totally see it. Compare the price of a footlong to a cheeseburger from mcdonalds, which is a much simpler and less varied offering.

So, let "mom & pop" start their own sandwich shop instead, and try doing more than babysitting teenagers and collecting receipts for corporate. Moreover, some shops really do have certain combinations of ingredients, or methods of preparation, that hit a "sweet spot" and would be difficult to exactly replicate elsewhere. My only complaint is there too expensive.

$25 for two 12 inch subs is pretty over priced.

Also as far as food goes, there's the classic cheese coneys, but if you wanna get really wild then find a place that sells spanish dogs, usually at root beer stands.

>what would I visit
the last thing I went to was the cuyahoga county scenic railway, nice train ride about 2 hours in all and once you reach the end they have a small museum about the history of Ohio's waterways and a old water elevator they had, as well as a room that was just general 19th century living stuff, I haven't been in about 6 years but COSI in columbus was something I enjoyed a lot and they swapped out some things outside like having a farming theme or construction, but thats more of a childrens thing, you could go hiking, we have a lot of that or cave exploring, we have tons of caves
>And seeing as this is /ck/ what's some shit to try and go eat there?
I have no idea, I rarely go out to eat and when I do its just fast food to hold me over until I get back home, also I live in a village (its not big enough to be classed as a town) of 500< people and am a 10 minute drive from town, most summers I would go to Seneca lake since its close, what I enjoy about Ohio is that I find the nature to be really nice looking and depending on where you are its mostly smaller towns, also I am Mennonite and I like the Amish around here.

This is a spanish dog
It's basically a chili dog, but the sauce is sweet and tangy. They're like crack.

Okay, you're starting to convince me. Is it just a regional/state thing or are there places that specifically sell it?

They're traditionally found at Root Beer Stands, and it seems to be a Ohio and Indiana thing, but they're not exactly a common menu item for the majority of restaurants.
The one my dad always took me to was B-K Root Beer Stand in Troy OH and we'd get like 8 spanish dogs and two fuckhuge mugs of rootbeer. It was a drive-in too, so they'd bring the tray to your car and hang it on the window old fashioned style.

People that eat fast food will be buying two fucking subs anyway. "HURRR IT IS HEALTHIER SO I CAN EAT DOUBLE" mentality.
No it isn't just the USA like some idiots claim.

They way fast food franchising works is usually an independent investor buys in to set up the restaurant. This seems counter intuitive since they're paying the corporation to open one of their restaurants but they're licensing an established brand. They also agree to conform to whatever standards corporate decides for them and in the case of Subway the corporation makes decisions which are horribly unprofitable for the franchisees.
