>What the fuck is a breakfast sausage

>“The basic distinction would be the rusk,” a type of wheat-based filler, says an employee at a major sausage manufacturer in New York who asked that I not use his name. “The rusk added to a banger is what makes them pop and what gives them that bang in the pan. That's where the name came from.”

>Classic American breakfast sausages don’t normally contain cereal filler—plenty do, says the employee, but it’s not traditional—more often having nonfat dry milk powder, which, combined with ingredients like cloves and brown sugar, give them a sweet flavor. Bangers, on the other hand, are more savory, containing a greater quantity of herbs like thyme, sage and marjoram, which is one reason why they go so well with mashed potatoes and gravy.

Sugar gets put in *everything* in america, usually in the form of corn syrup. Marketers figured out how to make things addictive without the use of literal drugs in the 50's, sugar heavily plays into that. There's also huge subsidies on Corn making it a cheap and profitable crop

American bread is sweetened to cover the taste, or lack thereof. Shelf stable bread is enriched with vitamins (this was considered a net positive for public health in the 50's) and of course is full of preservatives. Without the sweeteners added it's basically sawdust loaf.

Flower Foods, AKA Wonderbread, is still the 2nd or 3rd largest producer and distributor of bread product in the united states

The largest is Grupo Bimbo, who produce Bimbo Breads, also own and produce the Sara Lee and Thomas's brands among many other

>Ok, but I don't see a mandate to buy the shittiest brands on the market. Anyone living in the US will eventually know that these names are cancer.
what part of "these are literally the largest most successful breads in america" does not compute here

People are buying and consuming this shit in droves. Bimbo has ~8% market share, Flower has 4-5%. Both are absolute juggernauts in the baked good industry, their products dominate the market. People who don't consume this product are in the minority.

What this means is, regardless of whether or not they realize they are cancer, people are buying it and eating it anyway, and in astounding numbers. People in America eat slop because it's the cheapest and most efficient, this links back to a large socialization issue america has with equating MONEY and COST-EFFICIENT with happiness and success. We've been trained over successive generations to be absolute cogs, not only willing but eager to consume slop, and trained to enjoy it's taste.

It's not even a modern problem necessarily, de Tocqueville noted the American's unhealthy pre-occupation with making money as far back as the 1800's when he was writing 'Democracy in America' as a study for the French Revolutionary Republic
