The best one is call a saucepan/pan/pot. You really don't need a dedicated rice cooker.

InstantPot. Seriously, it makes rice just as well as a fancy cooker that costs 3 times as much.

if you are a fucking moron, obviously you'll need a rice cooker. Will you bring your rice cooker to your wife's mom? or will you bring it to another exotic country to show them how useless you are without a rice cooker?
use a fucking pot and learn how to cook rice.

If I were expecting to cook at a friend's house, and they didn't have something, I'd have brought it to begin with. Last time I hung with my best friend at his place I brought my enameled dutch oven to make a batch of Japanese curry, and the rice was made in his rice cooker.

You're seriously reaching hard to try to make your really stupid point.

This. Even the most basic rice cookers have two temperatures of cooking.

I've used mine to make
-slow cook oatmeal
-rice and curry dishes
-steam tamales
-ramen

It's automated and will go out of its way to not burn your food.

depends, I mean
it's room saved on your stovetop, if you want to stirfry x and blanch y
It removes all time constraints from your rice 'cause you can start it whenever and it'll be perfect without ever touching it again
That's worth £80 to me, but understandably it's not necessarily something everyone needs

unless you're making a huge amount of rice regularly, you don't need anything more than a large microwave safe plastic bowl. Do a 1 to 2.5 ratio of rice to water (eg, 2 cups of rice and 5 cups of water) and microwave it for 8 minutes on high, stir it and blast it again for another 3 minutes. It gets the job done without a unitasker.

I've got a massive coupon for my birthday and want to spend it on something for muh easy cooking. Initially I thought just a ricecooker, but I figured maybe I could also go for something that does more than one thing. Thing is, I know fuckall about these appliances. Anyone who can help me out here? Pic related is what my know-nothing thinks to maybe get, except that it seems quite overkill considering I make food for 3 people max and it says it can do sizes for 6 people or more.

Buy the cheapest one you can find on your country's bulletin board. I got a Chinese off-brand rice cooker for 10 euros. It cooks perfect rice every time. Sure, it's 2 times smaller than an instant pot, but I only cook food for myself, so whatever.

Pretty close to a 6qt model, if it's just mainly cooking for yourself, or one or two people, you might want a smaller one.

This is what I have:
https://www.amazon.com/Instant-Pot-Ultra-Programmable-Sterilizer/dp/B0777XZBMZ/ref=sr_1_2?crid=2Z3HBFEIKK4J5&dchild=1&keywords=instant+pot+ultra+3+qt&qid=1592677897&sprefix=instantpot+ul%2Caps%2C162&sr=8-2

That said, yeah, the larger one should be fine, it'll just take longer to come up to pressure with a smaller amount of food in the pot.

Honestly, OP it depends on your volume and what you plan to spend it on. They ALL use the exact same principle to cook the rice, so don't expect the 50 dollar module to do anything that a 15 dollar Imusa (which i had for five years and worked great). I don't know about Zojirushi and shit, but the Japanese love them to death, so many be some magic there.

honestly you can cook rice in a pot or saucepan.

That said, I wouldn't judge a guy for using a machine to cook rice of all things. If you're eating rice every day it'd definitely simplify things (not that the process is very complicated) and make it consistently too.

If you care about subtle differences in rice recipes, get a fancy one that also cares.
If you do not care about that, get the cheapest one button that is big enough for your typical batch size.
For years, I used a microwave rice steamer. They are not bad, but require you to have a microwave and not want to use it for something else while the rice is cooking.
Some people bake their rice. Some people use a pan on the stove. Some people insist on a special pot over a charcoal fire.
It all works.
If you want convenient, go cheap.
If you are fussy about quality, you may be disappointed if you don't get the expensive complicated one.

If you buy anything that says "enriched long grain" on the bag or you don't wash your rice, you don't care - save your money and get a cheap rice cooker.
