I know it's bait, but it's always cheaper unless you live off dollar menus and 4 for $4 combos. If you're getting actual food from a restaurant it's always going to be at least twice as expensive as making it yourself since they need to cover the cost of ingredients, power, gas and employees with just the food.

A meal at mcdonalds, fries, burger and a drink costs about £4 to 5. For that money I can get a small roast chicken and veg and in under an hour's prep (not including cooking time but you don't have to be constantly looking at an oven when you're roasting a chicken or potatoes) have four meals ready. If it's burgers, I can get six burgers with cheese, salad, buns and sauces for that price. And this is lower end nonsense, I can get joints of beef that a slice of which alongside some vegetables would cost me about 20 quid a plate, feed four people and have a bunch of beef left over for sandwiches, stews, pies, or all sorts of other dishes. This is a stupid frogpost designed for a you, well take it and choke on it.

Really? If anything, the wuflu pandemic has shown the opposite to me, that most young are hopelessly dependant on eating out and don't even have basic home cooking skills. The explosion in home delivery services show that much. I remember reading a few months ago that 2/3 of New Yorkers regularly eat out, and most do not have more than a few days worth of food in their home kitchen, if they have any at all.

>> No.14271503

Yeah, they're ordering fast food or shitty chain food. Most people here are either fast food or rice and beans and oats. If someone poorly recreates a Chef John recipe people go crazy, but suggesting that you're going to go out to a mid-tier restaurant and even tip the server sends people into a fit of rage. It's not everybody, but there's such an entrenched strain of anti-elitism on this board that it's almost impossible to even talk about most things food and cooking related without someone spamming soyboy memes. And NYC is not representative of anything but NYC.

Yep, the "shit will be automatically better by default and cheaper" meme has to stop. It's only "tastier" because you can do whatever random shit you like, like pouring half a container of garlic salt into your dish if that's your thing, or removing garlic if that's your thing. But it's not going to be as palatable to everyone. I get by cooking and can make a few dishes. There is no way in hell my cooking is going to be tastier than the cook/chef that spends the majority of their week cooking with different dishes. Maybe if I spend 10 years learning, but I don't have the time for that, because I have a job and friends.

Same goes for the whole "cheaper" aspect. Sure, you might be able to get 4 lbs of chicken for $8, but then you have to eat 4 lbs of fucking chicken. Cheaper to buy the ingredients to make 10 pizzas, but I only want to eat one pizza a month, so I'll just order in. Cheaper to make a big pot of chili, but I don't want to eat a week's worth of chili either. And yes, I know I can freeze a bunch of shit or make slightly different variations, but eventually you run out of space or are eating the same general shit each and every day, all in a hurry to make sure it doesn't go bad so you got the best bang for your buck. God forbid you have a roommate or limited fridge/pantry space, because everyone here lives in flyover land and can apparently freeze every living form of animal in their side freezer. I don't think most of us who are anti-cost/taste of home are decrying getting a steak and cooking that up on a grill or whatever. Or like making a couple of eggs and bacon. But when it comes down to making complex dishes and people expect you to have things "on hand," it's a losing battle.

If you go to a steakhouse and your steak isn't cooked the way you ordered it you can and should always send it back. If I went to Applebes and for some reason ordered steak and they fucked up the temp I'd just think, "okay, I'm not coming back to Applebees", but if you go to a steakhouse and they fuck up the temp it's probably some new guy and just a one-off situation. Stop being a pussy and just tell the waiter that that's not how you ordered your steak. The manager will probably come over and apologize profusely, take your steak back and stand over the shoulder of the guy cooking the new one, offer you a dessert on the house or comp your drinks, and possibly bring you an appetizer or side while you're waiting. Most restaurants have a 30% average food cost. 30% for the cost of the items in the dish, ~30% for labor, and the rest for overhead/profit. so generally speaking its 3x as cheap to make youre own version at home.

rarely do i ever get take out for things i do well on my own. burgers, grilled cheese, steaks, simple stuff like that. but some things I cant do well or I dont have all the specialized ingredients for or the time to make them. i.e. ramen, good curries, pizza, etc. I could make wings at home super cheap but i dont have a deep fryer and dealing with disposing of oil is a pain. so i order those too. etc, etc
