When I was like 20 I went through this weird phase where I put fennel in everything. I have zero fucking clue what I was thinking, that shit will fuck you up. It's like one of those spices that gets seeped through my pours after I eat it and it makes me smell like an immigrant worker or something. Bleh.

Caraway. It's like Cumin only more revolting. Also cloves. They're fine but I'll be forever scarred when I had lunch at my aunt and uncle's one day. They hate each other. That day he made pea soup. He always drops an onion in that soup and skewers it with a clove or two so they give off their flavor but you don't lose them in the soup and ruin your taste buds for the next twelve hours by accidentally biting down on one. But that day he must have been really pissed at her because he stuck fifty fucking cloves into that onion.

I used think the same way; you’re buying bay leaves at the grocery...those, like most grocery store spices, are months/years old, and the essential oils that make them flavorful are gone; for example, try fresh turmeric root vs powdered turmeric; if you get your spices fresh, like from Penzey’s or local Indian market, you’re going to fucking stunned at the difference; they’re also generally cheaper at those places; for bay leaves, pick the leaves yourself if you get the chance
