How is Onigiri so good??? I tried some the other day and it was so delicious. Its frankly amazing how japanese cuisine is so unpretentious yet balanced at the same time. Theres nothing like this in america.

Onigiri is one part of Japanese cuisine I've never gotten. I like sushi fine or miso, and red bean paste, but onigiri is just cold rice, maybe with a pickled plum in it or something. The American equivalent would be buttered toast.

Well...you tried. 5/10 for being edible, but I recommend practicing your technique. Onigiri also tends to be better made with short grained rice, as it tends to stick better and not fall apart like medium and long grained rice.

You realize that Japan was heavily under the influence of Chinese culture for many centuries up until the Heian Period. It was at that point that a distinctly Japanese culture began to emerge. The Heian Period started in the year 794CE, and is characterized by the development of a distinctly Japanese writing system and the birth of what became Japanese culture. As a result, it is only natural that many culinary traditions of Japan have roots in China while being distinct enough for the Japanese to call their own. In fact, the Japanese have a long and storied history of taking foreign influences and adapting them to Japanese tastes.
