If I'm having a little bit of whisky to sip, I'll forgo the ice. It looks nice and it dilutes the whisky to pretty much let you sip it over time, but it's just not how it's done.

However, I will use whisky in highballs as well because it's pretty much flavouring the soda water and you'll have it with ice too, because warm whisky highballs aren't great.

>> No.14094408

>>14091686
No ice, as this chills a drink which does (or at least should) not need to be chilled and waters it down in an uncontrolled manner.

However water, when applied in a controlled manner, is fine in Whiskey. Mostly, this applies to whiskeys which were bottled at cask strength. These should be watered down to a more manageable strength to balance flavour with alcohol.

If you go to Scotland you realise whisky is always consumed with a bit of water added. Stuff like Cardhu, where they don't clean the condensers, does seem better with ice because it has this weird oily taste. All up there's no general rule though, but do keep in mind that smashing stuff back straight isn't some test of masculinity. My wife loves straight scotch and I can't stomach it without water, unless it's some really inoffensive lowland or light Speyside malt.
