I probably have a better whisky collection than I do rum. But I find with whisky that I either have to keep chucking more and more money after a bottle, or be disappointed. But I dont really have the funds to be spending £100-£150 a bottle that often.

I've always like rum, but used to drink spiced rum a lot, and then whisky if I wanted something serious to sip on. Decided to just try dark rums for sipping instead. Already had Zacapa 23 that I picked up really cheap in duty free, and now got those 2.

Sobriety pros:

-you wake up in the morning feeling good
-you have dreams at night that you actually remember
-no shakes
-no problem getting an erection
-your family and friends don't hate you
-you save a LOT of money

cons:

Not gonna lie, it was on sale for 23€ while Glenfiddich or Higland Park (which I have seen recomended a lot) went by 30 and 34 respectively.

Also, in some other forums, the guys that seemed the most knowledgeable were pretty fond of this brand. I already know from drinking lots of different beers that booze "reviews" and shit like that aren't really worth a damm, but still, you gotta start with something and whisky isn't as cheap as european beer.

But, anon, that was literally my first Armagnac. I normally wouldn't start out with a $70 bottle but I instantly recognized the absurd value of a 25 year old for $70. You just don't find 25 year old spirits at that price.
It's an exceptional opportunity to experience the kind of flavors only found in a spirit aged 25 years in oak at that kind of price.

It'll be delicious if it's not sulfured. That's a good distillery and they make good sherrybombs. It probably won't be sulfured. However, with sherry cask whiskies you always run a slight risk of getting one aged in a barrel sterilized with a sulfur candle, which makes it smell and taste like rotten eggs. Also, Monkey Shoulder is not a bourbon and I would not recommend it as it is rather bland and flavorless.

This is literally all sherry casks in existence in the whisky industry. Casks used for sherry maturation aren't exported, they get new oak casks, fill them with sherry, "season" them for a few months/years, then ship them back to Scotland. There are some whiskies that have used "real" sherry casks, as in the ones used in bodegas, known as the solera cask but these are incredibly rare and incredibly expensive:
>Glengoyne 1990 Palo Cortado Finish
>Bruichladdich 1986/30 years

But >>13999050
refill/reused barrels aren't inherently worse, if you have a barrel that's been used twice, (as in once for bourbon, then once for scotch) thats a refill barrel and those are still pretty good. Especially if the maturation is a long one, you don't want a long maturation in a first-fill/virgin oak barrel. The problem is using excessively 2nd or 3rd refill barrels for short maturations (aka <10 years).

feel like i want to stick with 80~ proof if i can so wt101 was a contender but i want consistency in my drinks. beefeater is probably a better gin if you want transparency but i like the juniper forward bombay. i'd like to just have bourban, gin, and vodka as the core. rye, rum, and tequila i never liked as much. i'm fucking 40 so i just want what i like, or slightly upgraded versions. being a spirit snob is not really what i'm about. i just want the upper end of grocery store spirits, quality liqueurs that highlight them, and garnishes/accents that make me feel ok about drinking a lot

this is the trap i don't want to fall into. taking this into consideration, i probably want to have fewer choices at the beginning so i get better at making a limited number of drinks. two drinks per type of liquor, a red and a white wine, a stout, an ipa. this keeps the initial cost down until i want to branch out in ways i anticipate enjoying.

old fashioned, boulevardier, negroni, g&t, bloody mary, black russian. sangiovese, pinot grigio/gris, old rasputin, dogfish head 90. i already know i like these and i can get speed pourers and bar mats later. reading liquid intelligence now and realizing how deep you can get into this with pipettes and centrifuges. i just want a simple home setup with a little variety.
