Can you burn ice? Like if you fry it and the pan is very hot for example, can the ice get burnt before it turns into water and starts evaporating?

I'm asking because this one recipe for ciabatta suggests putting ice cubes into the oven to keep the crust from forming for a bit longer. I'm worried they'll burn and stink up the bread though.

In an ideal scenario, but in practice that's not all you will find in water. Pure H2O will not conduct electricity. The best ice recipe around
You need to get some ice cubes made of water any shape will do.
Get your breading station ready with four egg and bread crumbs and make sure to put salt pepper in every part.
Now four then egg then bread crumbs each ice cube and put it on a tray.
Once done put in freezer for later
Now heat a pot of oil to 350 and cook them till brown and crispy.

You can sort of do it OP. It's just kinda tricky. You need something to caramelise and darken the ice.

You can use butter but oil works faster and I got better results from it.

The oil has to be very very hot when u out in the ice cubes, otherwise they'll melt before you get a nice char.

Once you have your bag of ice cubes and your oil. (I suggest plain veg oil, saves you waiting to long for it to heat up).

If you want to do multiple at once just get a medium saucepan, fill it about 2/3 of the way with oil. Turn the heat on high and let it get hot (15 - 20 min), have a siev or pasta spoon at the ready. Again making sure your saucepan full of oil is really really, toss a leveled bowl of ice cubes into the pot all at once. It will bubble a little but don't worry. After about 10 seconds, take out ice cubes. And voila chared frozen ice cubes, they look pretty spectacular actually. (if you want them fully black just let the oil heat up a bit longer)

Have fun.
