There's three or four breweries in my town, despite being less than 30,000 people. This one is my favorite. There's breweries opening (and closing) all the time around here. Back when I lived in Jersey, there were only a handful of mediocre brewpubs in the whole county, although maybe times have changed.

I'm from Ontario and I'd probably say that Folly's in Toronto has been my favourite in terms of overall quality.
They do a shit ton of weird stuff with yeast strainsand never overprice their beers like Burdock and Bellwoods do. That and they also rarely get stuck on one style at a time. They do Farmhouse ales, Sour ales, IIPAs, porters, stouts, berliner weisses and then weird shit like bieres du gard, dark malt sours and cognac barrel aged Flanders red ales. Almost everything they do is fucking fantastic. Their main brewer left a year ago but the current guy there is doing a good job to keep up the quality.

In terms of newer brewers, I really like Willibald Farm's stuff out in Ayr, Ontario. Their double IPA is really really good. Also Godspeed makes crazy good shit but I sadly never go to them often as they're more east end.

In that vein, Stickmen brewing out of Oregon has done a couple great brews. One being a melon sour called "Kissed by Melons" and the other being a double Dunkelweizen called "Bananas on Fire" that has a lot of caramel and banana tones with a malty back.

For DFW beers, Tupps is pretty decent.

The problem with a lot of DFW breweries is that they have one or two good beers with a lot of filler. Take Rahr, Martin House, or Community for example.

This is why I'm glad I live in texas beer nirvana: Austin. ABW, Southern Heights, Oddwood Ales, or even Hopsquad are all preferable to what dallas has to offer.

Did have some turning point a while back and it was pretty decent.

Either Parish brewing or Abita. Parish has more critical acclaim and can make an IPA that actually tastes good and isn’t only a bottle of liquid hops. Abita has been around much longer from before microbreweries were the hot thing and probably has more popular support. Pic related is one of my favorite Abita offerings but now they have a bunch of gay New Orleans-y art on the bottle to attract hipsters instead of the old clean style they had before.

Kek look at Central waters overall rating vs any of the breweries I listed. Also include how many people actually logged in their beers vs how many from SC/OH/KB etc

The overall rating for the NYC breweries is higher and has far more check ins (imo making the rating more valid - what's better, 100k check ins or 2k?

I've had a few central water beers and they were pretty good. Some anon above pointed out these Midwest beers are overhyped because they generally have less ratings and it's mostly locals drinking them while the NYC ones are tourist destinations and even get exported

I have a hard time believing any beer rated above a 4.5 due to this. I've no doubt these are good beers but I still say ours are better

>> No.13814696

>>13814669
NY one actually had fewer ratings on its top beers

You really swung and missed here. You specifically cited these ratings as why your brewery was better when they do not show your brewery is better you come and say they aren't accurate

I have drank beer in a lot of different cities, always seeking the best stuff, usually focused on big barrel aged beers. No one does that style better than the upper midwest, and no one has been doing it longer than them. NYC's beer scene is just too small and insignificant to have the sorts of barrel aging programs people like CW, Revolution, Goose Island, Toppling Goliath, Lakefront, Surly etc have.

Until very recently any NYC restaurant or bar that wanted a legit beer menu had to go way outside the region let alone the city to fill out a good menu, but beer is getting better everywhere and has been for a long time. Very recently I was in similar but slightly further behind beer scene in DC and was just amazed at what a small portion of beer menus was devoted to local stuff

Overall brewery rating on untappd is fairly meaningless. Its more a measure of what portion of a brewery's beer is high end special release stuff, so it will always favor smaller newer ones with high end taproom releases being the bulk of the business model. Take Central Waters for instance, they have been around twenty some years, most of their beer ratings come from their every day grocery store stuff, and most predate the current taproom sales trend. CW has done a great job staying and even becoming more relevant as the industry trends forward but the bulk of their sales will always come from just ok everyday beer, not their absolutely amazing barrel aging program (though they have one of the largest barrel aging stock of any brewery in the country, the only brewery of that size to have even close to that much experience with barrel aging)

The vast majority of smaller recent breweries need to constantly pump out new hype styles like overfruited kettle sours and milkshake IPAs and pastry stouts, all styles that generate huge average ratings, and they sell very few classic craft beers that inherently belong to styles that generate lower average ratings

>> No.13814734

>>13814699

I mean the ratings don't lie on the barrel aged ones, I'm contesting them because they have a fairly low amount of check ins compared to the NYC beers. Grimms barrel aged (plus SC and OH) have anywhere from 2 to 10 times the check ins. Plus these breweries are expanding outside the NYC region as we speak.

Regardless whenever I travel anywhere in the US for work/road trips/vacations I like to check out local breweries. I doubt I'll make my way to Wisconsin any time soon but if I do I'll stop by

>>13814712
That's true in that they're constantly pumping out new beers but they're doing it in decent amounts; some hit up to 200k rates before the beer is d/c'd. I think it's a reflection of the market, in that people want to try new beers constantly instead of drinking the same stuff over and over again. They might have a flagship for a year or two but most of these places have a revolving menu. That's why I tend to trust a better overall rating; keeping up with solid content is harder than having solid hyped flagships (see: alchemist beer)

>I think it's a reflection of the market,
Oh, it absolutely is, and I am definitely not trying to say this is a bad thing. Just pointing out that older craft breweries are in a very different market position than the new ones. As the number of breweries has skyrocketed over the last 10 year, grocery store sales are basically not an option for newcomers now, but they still make up the large majority of sales for older craft breweries, so trying to boil down an average untappd rating for a brewery just by averaging all beer ratings is not a great way of comparing different breweries of different scopes because these primary sources of sales lend themselves to both different customers and different sales strategies

I personally buy the large majority of my beer at taprooms, and a lot of other people, especially those disproportionately likely to use untappd. But still way more craft beer is sold through retail overall

>> No.13814767

>>13814741

The taproom is a more affordable way for me to try the beers, plus it's fun. The 16oz cans are getting ridiculously expensive - some are regularly above 20 bucks and it's annoying. Buying the cans at the Brewery is at least cheaper. Whenever I'm in NJ I marvel at the price of cans in stores there, even with high tier beer.

How much is a 4 pack of your higher tier beers in your states? Even in Vermont, the high tier alchemist wasn't as crazy as what some of these stores charge

Warren MI here, and we have two excellent brewpubs (used to have three);

Kuhnhenns - the first one in town with great beer and now two locations, the original joint on Chicago and Mound Rd and their much larger new place (that is also their production facility for sale to bars and such) on Groesbeck south of 16 Mile Rd (that also has food, the original place only has pizza)

https://kbrewery.com

Dragonmead - this place is on 11 Mile service drive east of Groesbeck and they have a smaller bar with their brewing operation in the back of the building. Also lots of great beers and they also have food.

http://www.dragonmead.com/index.php?p=home

Falling Down Brewery - was on 10 Mile Rd. west of Ryan and had great beer and food but I heard the owner died right when they were expanding to other locations and now it’s sadly out of business.

For beer I would say Eagle Park, 1840, Vennture, and Hacienda are the best beer, Lakefront's beer isn't quite as good but the atmosphere is great and really a good place for tourists, and probably the best deep fried cheese curds in the city.

If you are going to do a serious beer centric trip to Wisconsin, I would absolutely plan it to coincide with one of New Glarus's R&D releases in the summer if you at all like sour beer, and spend a night in Madison from there too, and if more time make the trip up to Central Waters because their beer is amazing but the place is in the middle of nowhere so probably just worth trying them at bars elsewhere. Of the dfw breweries that do their own distribution I think I like peticolas best, and I think they still just sell beer by the keg to bars. When you compare rahr or real Ale or even revolver to these, you're talking about one or two orders of magnitude larger operations. Of course they're not going to be the same. As for what I drink most? Deep ellum ipa or community Mosaic. Because I'm old and just want to get fucked up without pissing a million times a night like macro lagers cause me to do.

>> No.13840284

>since normies don't use untappd
If you are a newish small brewery, a very large chunk of your customer base uses, at least casually, untappd. If you are a large brewery that does most of your sales in grocery stores then you probably do not, but its a big deal for small, tap room centric breweries which is the model most new breweries of the last few years have needed to take

Now the fact that some of these use probable untappd outlook in designing recipes also pisses off a significant portion of their peers, its kind of a hot button issue right now amongst brewers at younger breweries

Honestly I think more people engage with Untappd than instagram at most small new breweries as they have a very male centirc customer base, and instagram culture is more of a woman thing

Now they are absolutely turning toward seltzer to attract women, many states have laws saying you can only sell alcohol that you make on site, or other similar restrictions, so this pivot allows people to sell stuff to people that don't really care about their main product widening the type of groups likely to go. A lot of people won't go to a brewery if there is one or two women in their group that just straight up refuse to like beer, but having seltzer available brings the whole group
