I hope that you're a teenager and that you're only doing this while going to school, because you're actually very underpaid even as a dishwasher. All thanks to the shared top system.
Also the "shared tip" system is a huge scam, I used to work for a restaurant as a busser and got paid the same amount (except it's $7.50 minimum wage where I live, so I got paid $5.50 + tip per hour) and if you do the math you're more often than not going to make slightly more than minum wage or break even, so if you worked a job that just paid you an extra $3 or $4 above what you're paid now you would consistently make more money per paycheck then being a dishpig or waiter. My second minimum wage job at a cattle feed store paid me an extra $1.50 over minimum wage (for a total of $9 per hour) and I got a bonus every month if we made our sales goal (which happened all the time, cattle feed is low overhead and high profit). I went from barely being able to fuel up my car to drive to college to having enough money every month to buy myself something nice with my sale bonus money.
You can make it Anon, dishpit and backroom restaurant jobs are always going to be shit because you are easily replaceable by the extremely poor, stupid, or illegal immigrants.
If you're one of those three then you're kinda fucked unfortunately.

Most zero skill positions these days require serving or trying to sell to retarded customers. Most dish jobs you get shit for going out in front where the customers can see you unless you work in a diner. Great gig for introverts.

Washing dishes take about as much skill as 90% of the construction trades. The better you get the less work you're doing. It becomes a really cushy gig. Once you're good you feel like you really only work during rush hour on the weekend or during holidays the place is open. The difference is their unions actually do something though while the culinary union seems to only give a damn about getting more people with gauges in their ears into management.

Was a dishbitch for a bit over a year.
It was okay mostly, got along well with the chef and always got free food. One of the waitresses had the most perfect athletic perky ass and she always wore yoga pants, that was nice too. But it was a small cafe with a tiny washroom in constant view of customers through a window and door. It also got disgustingly hot and stuffy inside in summers, the one ventilation fan barely worked. And I had to squeeze past seated customers with a massive rubbish bag whenever it was busy and the kitchen bin needed emptying (had to go through the back seating area to get to the dumpsters). Fucking hated doing that.
Also I was only making $15 an hour (AUD) which I'm pretty sure is below minimum wage, idk never bothered checking the technicalities. I do bullshit casual work for a Uni now doing mostly nothing and get $33

Nobody wants to wash dishes for a living. If I'm stuck in this job much longer I'll kill myself. That said I like it better than a lot of other low wage jobs I've worked. Free shift meals, free soda, free ice cream, complete independence and control over my workflow and station, most of my coworkers are cool as fuck, and I can do basically whatever I want all night as long as I keep caught up and get my closing shit done on time. I spend half of every night browsing 4chan and playing vidya. The problems are that the work itself is dirty (and I'm a huge germophobe), the GM is an insufferable cunt, and even wearing gloves my hand still dry out extremely bad and hurt nonstop if I don't lotion every night.

based fellow michiganger dishbitch

Whenever we would bake chicken you had to scrape the residue off with steel wool and gallons of degreaser and there were always at least a dozen pans a day. definitely the worst part besides the flimsy martini glasses they would put mac n cheese in and you cut your finger shattering them when you try and clean them out

I lied about my age since I was only15, said I was 16 yo and got a job at a texmex restaurant as a dishpit for my first job just by walking in and asking for work w/o any application. The manager knew I was underage but he didn't give a shit an hired me on the spot, It was hard work. Covered in grease at the end of the shift. They served metal plates for the enchiladas, burritos and chimichangas so they had to be stacked so they soaked to be able to remove the baked on cheese before running through the dishwasher. Slow times, the manager forced me to sort the rocks out of beans. Have to say I occasionally left some in. Tbf, he allowed you a meal everyday for free.

When I was a dishwasher there was one fucking prep cook who'd always burn pots. I just straight up refused to clean them after a while. I'd just leave them. He'd not clean them. Eventually we ran out of unburnt pots because they were all sitting in dish(took about a week). Then one day I came in for lunch and spent three hours learning prep while he painstakingly cleaned every single one. Based chef.

I have actually worked in an American restaurant and got tipped out at a standard rate(2% of gross sales split among all the bussers on that shift) but now that you say that, I can see how silly it sounds. It is funny to hear about America's tipping culture and also hear how even servers have to tip people working below them like a sort of internal"tipping economics" in the restaurant industry(which they kind of do). This. Fucking this. I'd be a server but its so boring. Even in the rush i felt like i was sitting on my hands every shift. My co workers other than back of house were fucking mindless and would freak out if anything bigger than a 5 top came in. Like what the fuck? Imagine how the guy cooking for the 5 top feels. Especially when you double ring in 2 tables without warning and put everyone on edge for no reason. By far the worst parts of BOH are the pay and the servers. The worst parts of FOH is FOH.

check you are getting the industry award rate, should be ~25 dollars per hour for memory, more on weekends or super late nights.
you are allowed to take a decent break if your shift is over a certain period long, otherwise if its just dinner rush or lunch rush then you'll be working non stop, however depending on the place if you want a few minutes for a smoke or want to go get a drink out front thats normally completely fine, just mirror what everyone else does.
specifically for kitchen hand though(im assuming you mean both dishpig and various prep/line work), dish work and general cleaning is the easier stuff in the sense that you can tune out and scrub while only using 10% of your brain power, so default to that if you are tired or bored with nothing to do. any chopping, prep work, or fryer work or whatever else you will be doing is a bit more involved in terms of needing precision and learning, so save your braincells for that.
