Your local slop cannot compare to american food. We take the best food from all over the world and improve it. That's US food culture. Europeans are used to bad food, so good food confuses and upsets you. You won't find any in muttland. Go order a burger at your local McDonalds and save yourself the trouble. Their entire cuisine consists of chain restaurants.

Southern places will have a lot of good regional food, try Cajun/Creole food if you go to New Orleans and look for a good Barbecue place anywhere else in the south.
In California find an authentic Mexican place. These exist throughout the country but are especially prevelent in California.
San Francisco will also have authentic Asian places, even of obscure countries.
But California doesn't really have a regional cuisine on its own, but it has immigrant groups.

the best america has to offer food-wise is southern cuisine. smoked ribs, brisket, collards, mac and cheese, red beans and rice, cornbread, fried chicken...it's all unbelievably delicious. in nyc the obvious answer is pizza. LA has ridiculous mexican food. never been to the bay area so I dunno about that.
