It's not a stretch. "Detroit style pizza" is not called such because of the square shape, that is incidental, and the only thing the two have in common.

Detroit style pizza is always square, but it's not the shape that makes it noteworthy. The crust, or lack thereof of a crust, is literally the point. The crust is crispy and crunchy and lined with cheese to the end that becomes basically a well done cheese cracker. That is the entire defining factor of "Detroit style", if your pizza doesn't have that kind of crunchy and well done cheese crust, it's not that.

Depends on what part of Michigan you're in. Detroit and the area around it have a wide range of food from greasy spoon Coney Diners to upscale boujie nonsense like Chartreuse.

If you're from out of state, definitely check out the middle eastern restaurants since they're criminally underrated. Yemen Cafe in Hamtramck is great and stupid cheap for the quality of food you get. If you've got a big group and give them notice, you can get a whole roasted lamb for a pretty reasonable price.

Depends entirely on the general region of the state, unless you're willing to drive anywhere within a fucking 8 hour radius. Southeastern MI, where I live, has a ton of great Mediterranean and Asian places. Then you've got various well known restaurants: Lipuma's coney, Slow's Barbecue, Mercury Bar, Noble Fish, One Eyed Betty's, probably a bunch more but those are the ones I've been to. There's also a Fogo de Chao in Troy, it's not MI-exclusive but the food is good nonetheless. Up in Mackinaw City, there's Scallawag's Whitefish and Chips, which is probably the best place in MI to get fish and chips from. Went there once about 2 years ago, the fish was really fresh and they didn't fucking overcook the hell out of it like some places do.

Do flyovers actually believe this? Anything you can find in the midwest you can find in any non-flyover state. I don't even live in the main city of my non-flyover state and I can find dozens of quality Greek/Arab restaurants in a 10 mile radius of my house. Detroit style pizza is just burnt pan pizza and "coney island restaurants" are just hotdog stands that put chili, onions and mustard on a hotdog and call it "original".

>> No.13613852

Not really known as a state for food. The UP has supper club culture, so think Friday night fish fries with Lake Superior whitefish or yellow lake perch, Saturday night prime rib with relish bar, etc. Pasties are a regional specialty, but it’s just like a meat pie. Some of the resort towns have nice farm to table restaurants. There’s decent brewery/gastropub type food around the state. Michigan is mostly a meat and potatoes kind of state. There’s decent food to be found in most places, but there’s not really a respected culinary tradition to speak of.

You can tell how the state culinary tradition is by this thread, a guy literally said there’s a Gogo de chao in Troy, as if that was actually a restaurant worth mentioning. It’s like saying theirs a Ruth’s Chris In Grand Rapids that’s good. Michigan has a lot of kitschy tourist places where the menu hasn’t changed in 50 years, but that doesn’t mean it’s interesting food at all.

I love Michigan, but the food leaves a little to be desired.

You're a complete larper. Smelt isn't nearly what it used to be 30 years ago because they simply aren't there in the numbers they used to be. Smelting used to be a night time tradition, but unfortunately is rare to find nowadays. Venison is plentiful and often eaten. Salmon isn't even native to the state (not that there's anything wrong with it). Pike isn't that widely eaten because it has such bony flesh. Sturgeon fishing is highly restricted because of overfishing, so good luck getting any. Bear is highly restricted as well, only a limited number of tags and few bear hunters. I've never heard of anyone eating beaver, most people trap it for the fur.

Just how much of a dumbfuck larper are you?

Overrated imo. O.W.L is my favorite. I like the food, I like the atmosphere, I like the style of the place. You go there at night and run into people you know or meet new people out on the town for the night after a few drinks. Everything is jammed together so you have to acknowledge the people sitting beside you because you’re literally going to be rubbing shoulders. It’s not quite communal table style eating but it definitly encourages patrons to interact with each other. Lots of good stuff on the menu. I will take one of their jalapeño bacon cheeseburgers with some chihuahua cheese and a old fashioned glass bottle coke over a red coat tavern burger any day.
