>Wusthof makes full lines of both stamped and forged steel knives
Have you ever watched a video of how those knives are made? There is no sch thing as a "forged" Wüsthof, as in, drop forged from a lump of steel. The "forged" knives are stamped as blanks from the same giant roll of steel sheet as the stamped ones. The only difference is that the "forged" knives have the bolster area induction heated, then that area is hydraulically squished together so it forms a bulge and then that bulge (and only the bulge) is drop forged into shape. The blade never comes into contact with a hammer. They show it very clearly in their production video on youtube.

>> No.13564695

>>13564665
True. The real difference is how the two are heat treated. The forged wusthofs are considerably harder than the stamped versions. If you get the two side by side you can feel how much more flexible the metal on the stamped versions is. A lot easier to break.

>> No.13564705

No way a Wüsthof made from soft German steel break just from coring a bellpepper. This was a manufacturing defect. I once bought a used German WMF chef knife from ebay that was totally crooked, apparently a factory defect and blade was warped from quenching. No idea how that ever made it through QC. I was able to straighten it but I had to put nearly all my weight (280lbs) and strength behind it and bend the blade nearly 45° on a bench, that is how tough those knives are. Contact Wüsthof, they ought to replace that knife for free.

Yeah I'm pretty sure that is unlikely. Have you taken a look at the surface/inside of the crack? Can you tell if the surface shows discolorations or two different finishes/tones that might indicate a crack? Also take a look at the shard of the blade near the fracture - if you really levered with the blade hard enough for it to break it ought to be at least a little bent in that area. I'd try to get a replacement from Wüsthof.

I dont know the failure you speak of, but my GE microwave has a faulty membrane keypad that registers phantom button presses for no reason.
