No they aren't inherently bad but when you prioritize a products look over how it tastes, that's when it's bad. Hothouse/beefsteak tomatoes in America are modified to be as large and juicy as possible yet picked completely green. They're ripened with ethylene from an artificial source while in storage (when naturally, they would ripen due to the proximity of other fruit on the vine or another plant) and thus are red by the time they are transported and put on shelves. You'll notice most tomatoes are hard as fuck. That's because they're not actually ripe, but they look ripe and when you bite into it, it tastes like a mushy green tomato with an almost grainy texture.

That being said, growing your own tomatoes is easy as fuck and results tomatoes 300% better than conventional storebought. If you're too fucking lazy to grow what is essentially a retard-proof houseplant, your best bet in getting not completely disgusting tomatoes is to go for local and/or heirloom varieties.
