I remember reading some british guy's rant about the "proper way" to make tea, and it was exactly that: water too hot, steep for too long, then argue about whether to add the milk and sugar to the cup before or after the tea.

I think there's a place for black tea with milk and sugar, but to pretend that it is the only way (or even the best way) to make tea is just compensating for a lack of ability.

Not really as most teas are drunk with or without milk as a matter of course. Black teas will typically have milk in them, green and white don't. There's some that go this way or that like Earl Grey, whatever.

Now EVERYTHING ELSE is a fucking autistic argument. How long do you brew the tea, how much tea do you use, how much milk, do you add sugar? Do you have milk before or after pouring the tea? Etc, etc. It also doesn't help that really most people in tea drinking countries don't actually treat tea all that well. The autistic coffee revolution that swept the world hasn't quite got to tea yet. I'm the only one I know who uses loose leaf for example.

Yeah, you're right that good black tea has a lot of complexity. Bitterness isn't inherently bad, although bad processing of tea (grinding it to dust, breaking leaves excessively) does create bitterness where it might not be desired.

Your average Twinings or Dilmah bags are not good black tea though, and that's what most brits are drinking.

Over the course of 32 years, I've lived in 7 states and have traveled to all but 4. I've never even heard of anyone putting milk or cream in tea.
That is definitely not an American practice.
I can't speak for New England as those are the 4 states I've yet to visit.

Regular bong tea is generally Indian centric and malty, combining well with milk. Plenty of bongs take more interest in other kinds of tes and are happy to drink them without milk.

That's largely a historical vestige. Early British china was low quality so it would crack if you put hot ass tea in it first, Chinese stuff wouldn't but was much more expensive.
