What are your favorite old people snacks and drinks? Like the ones your grandparents would have that was more popular in their youth. Pic highly related

My grandmother died back in 2016 and at her funeral I told a story about her pbj sandwiches when she used to babysit us
She used to make us a pbj sandwich with rye bread, all natural mashed peanuts with orange marmalade
After the funeral all the old folk that were there came to me and said they said it sounded good and they were gonna make it.
She was a big supporter of "it's okay to eat if you cut off the moldy/bad areas". She never threw anything out and always wondered why she gets sick/food poisoning when we were there.

I know she intended good but man, that was some shit I couldn't ever think of. She died of brain cancer and I'll never forget her last words to me before she lost her ability of speech and motor functions
>why are we paying for chemotherapy and these tumor removal operations if I'm going to die anyway?
>If I'm gonna die at least don't waste money on it, shit.
A based grandmother if I've ever seen one. Always liked her old cookie recipes. All handwritten. Still have em too

I've had 2 friends who refused treatment just for that reason. Of course they were americans. Surprisingly, there's a lot who do just that in this shit hole.

Its technically a dish and not a snack/drink, but mother fucking elderberry soup is the best.

When in season, boil elderberries (stems and all) in a bit of water, add apples if you feel like it. After a while strain the pulp and stems, boil again with a bit of sugar and maybe some sodium benzoate if to intend to store more than 6 months. Bottle that shit up, and you've got a sort of strong preserved elderberry juice.
You can just add water and drink it cold, OR, you can wait until a cold winter day, put a liter or two in a pot, maybe add some water to stretch it, some cut up apples if you want some texture, and a bit of lemon and cinnamon for festive taste if its december. Heat and thicken with some corn starch (or flour, but cornstarch works better) until you've got a rich dark purple soup.
Serve topped with crushed up rusk, or some stale bread thats been cubed and fried in a bit of butter, or some rolled oats thats been roasted on a dry frying pan. Also sour cream if you want.

Its like a ~150 years old poor person's dish from Denmark. Hasn't really been popular since WW2.
Theres practically no protein or fat in it, its all carbs if you don't add sour cream. But its so fucking packed with vitamin C that its gonna cure scurvy in anyone within a 10 mile radius. Perfect for when you're just trying your "damned hardest to make it through the winter without losing more than one kid to starvation before the spring crops come in" as my great grandpa put it.

they were draft-dodgers who came over during WWII from Russia through Denmark but were 200% mutt before they even set foot in New York. They had a lot of strange customs passed down from generations and generations of gettin the fuck out X European country before the economy collapsed/they were occupied. Somehow now Jewish though

Took grandpa to a dive bar and he mentioned how places back in the day used to have a big ass jar in the corner with pickled eggs that you could snack on.

I looked up a recipe and made a batch at home for shits and giggles, now I always have a jar going no matter what.

My grandma was a second gen danish immigrant, so she brought some stuff. During Christmas, she would make pebber nodder, which is like this slightly sweet sugar cookie that you roll and cut into little chunks. My mom has made it for everyone since I can remember. My grandma passed away right after thanksgiving. I will keep making them, and share it with my kids.

that and she would serve pickles with every meal. I love pickles. sometimes we would make a kringle, but normally we just had pebber nodder.

based, sounds like my grandma too. Was your grandma raised during the depression?
>grew up on rural kansas farm during the depression
>raised her 5 siblings at the same time
>never wasted a cent, always looking for deals, recycling containers for other purposes\
>has her own garden, cans and dries fruit from it, including peaches, plums, apples, strawberries, snap peas, rhubarb, spinach
> egg cartons saved for storing the fruit in before drying, cool whip for storing food she made, etc.
>had a whole barter system set up with all her neighbors to exchange the food for
she had a stroke recently and was no longer able to live on her own so we sold her house, it made me tear up seeing her garden completely empty like that. she made such good rhubarb-strawberry pie too :(
