It’s ok in a pinch but I usually almost always have a stick of room temp butter out and more in the Fridge. I cook with butter regularly and there’s definitely a noticeable difference between the two.

I can't believe it's not butter is alright. I sometimes buy the spray on version for air-popped popcorn because I think the mister is pretty diffuse and you use so little of it. This is when I'm cutting back or dieting at the moment.
For the most part, I simply don't buy it. All butter all the time.

Butter isn't unusual, any veggies you'd sautee going into the rice for pilaf, from onion to mushrooms would be done in butter. You just have no frame of reference. And, it's not just an American thing. Buttery ghee is the fat used in Indian biryani afterall.
