13305572 No.13305572 [Reply] [Original]

Throughout history, people have cooked with animal fats and used olive oil to finish a dish. Hearing olive oil is not only unhealthy, but also a brutish thing to do, as it destroys its delicate flavor, much more pronounced in the extra virgin.

Even the Romans used it only for dressings.

Cooking olive oil doesn't destroy the flavor it changes the flavor. Like soy sauce, olive oil has a different flavor when heated than when it's uncooked.

In a study done with apes who were given olive oil, and a control group given animal fats, both over the course of 5 years had similar health problems, high blood pressure, clogged arteries, etc. I'm cannot be bothered to find the study, but the conclusion was that; olive oil = animal fats.

Studies like this always make me laugh because the method is usually something like feeding them a cup of oil a day and then being surprised when they have health problems, and then """science""" magazines run with it and say oil is bad. Also
>control group given animal fat
That's not a control, then. If they were trying to compare the two, they should have been giving one group olive oil, one group animal fats, and have a control fed a normal diet it. The methodology is also going to be sketchy if they were giving them the oil *in addition* to their normal diet, in which case you could easily attribute the health problems to simply eating too much. Or, if they restricted part of the diet and replaced it with the oils, you could attribute the health problems to malnutrition, not that the oils were inherently bad.

My point is that dietary studies are usually not reliable.

Okay I don't usually waste my time to share this information especially on /ck/. But if you really want the red pill on fat/oil go to raypeat.com - he is an 80 something year old biologist who has studied this stuff more extensively than anyone else. You have to want to learn for yourself though, I'm just providing the resource. The TL;DR is that the human body temperature is 98 degrees which is utterly incompatible with unsaturated oils which are highly unstable at such a temperature long term and wreak havoc causing a lot of damage over time and ultimately leading to cancer heart disease etc. Only saturated fats like butter are safe in our bodies because they are stable at high temperature. He quotes almost no studies on calcification or Atherosclerosis for humans or good animal models (ie. apes and some monkeys). All the other health effects are nice and all, but it's almost always heart attacks which kill us.

There is one paper for CLA supplementation for rabbits, a human equivalent dose to the paper would be around 20 grams of CLA a day. You'd need to eat 4 kg of butter ...
