I got really drunk, went to Taco Bell, and on the way back home I crashed onto the train tracks. My car was totaled and my license got revoked for 1 year and I ended up paying over $10,000 in fees before I was able to get my license back. This was also only my FIRST offense, so this is lenient compared to a second offense.

I would highly not recommend drinking and driving it's just not worth the consequences. I didn't even get to eat my Taco Bell.

Do I drive after a single drink? All the time.
Do I ever drive drunk? Never.

The zero tolerance thing is really just because you can't trust a whole population to understand the nuance of "moderation" so they go all out. In reality you can easily take the wheel after a glass of wine with dinner and a small spirit as a treat afterwards with no measurable effects in terms of reaction time.

Of course if you were to be so honest you'd have a slew of dipshits knocking back 3/4th of a whisky bottle and telling themselves they're all good.

This is like the alcohol version of abstinence-over-safe-sex education. Everything is safe under the right circumstance. They don't teach kids that, because they don't trust dumbasses (not implying you are) to handle that responsibility. Especially kids.

There's nothing wrong with a few swigs of wine then going for a drive. Millions of people do this every single day. You actually drink less in the car than you do at the bar you were in beforehand. It's not like you're chugging the bottle from the cupholder or doing shots on the dash. He was just tasting it.

There are only two pieces of furniture in my livingroom.
A small sofa, the kind that, theoretically, seats two, and a coffee table.
On the table is my laptop and a plastic mixing bowl that I sometimes need when I throw up.

The hardest part of the day is the morning, which can be any time between 5 AM and 2 PM, because I wake up both hung over and in withdrawals. I can fix both issues with a glass of vodka from the freezer of course, but I need to keep it down. Not easy when you're that nauseated.
I have lost too many keyboards to count to vodka shooting out of my mouth and nose because my body was violently rejecting it, not understanding that it needed that medicine, and two laptops.
Even when I was spewing violently into a barely one month old laptop my biggest worry was the vodka I was wasting.

I don't have a car.

I got a dwi after hitting a car. Luckily nobody was hurt. My insurance company had to pay 30k to the other driver and passenger. But they were illegal and didn’t want to testify. I hired an excellent attorney (I went to the same law school so he charged me 75% of normal price but I still payed $7500). Had a .022 bac. It was the worst year of my life going to court for that while also hoping the partners at the firm I worked at didn’t catch on. Turned out the cop who did my field sobriety test (my lawyer thought I didn’t look drunk in it and wanted to put me on the stand) later assisted in a hit job on an armored vehicle. So he couldn’t testify. State dropped the charges since my lawyer kept dogging them.

Don’t drink and drive. I have not since. I call Uber, Lyft, or a cab. Worst decision I ever made was drinking and driving.

This is my life right now, I’m always high behind the wheel, I have a separate designated car bong. At this point my tolerance is so high you can’t tell I’m high by looking at me so I’ve been pulled over and passed cops checking my eyes with a flashlight. I’ve also figured out how to smoke without making any smell, you just have to hit all the weed in one go, don’t let any smoke rise off the top of the bowl or leave any in the bong take it all into your lungs, hold it for just at least 5 seconds then breath out through a substrate like a towel or your shirt collar in a pinch.

Never agree to a breathalyzer. They'll drag you to the station to give you a more precise test which will buy you time to sober up. This will vary from state to state but generally there's no reason to believe cops will give you a fair reading especially if you're ethnic.

Ressouces online are either .gov type stew that will urge you to comply "for your own good" and defense attorneys telling you not to agree to anything that isn't mandatory, so check your locale.

If you're going to sip and drive, at least educate yourself on how to mitigate the dui risks.

My friends are degenerates with several DUIs

We went to a local football game one day, the tickets were free so we spent a lot on booze. This clown of a friend of mine then decides he's going to drive 45 mins blackout drunk to the border because he "heard" theres a big party there. He makes it all the way down there but rolls through the literal last stop sign on the road and boom gets pulled over and smacked with a years suspension, 10,000 fees and more to get his lisence back and 2000 per year after to keep driving.

My other friend went to the Calgary Stampede and decided to drive home drunk (2 hours) and didn't even make it 20 mins before he ripped an illegal uturn and was busted for a DUI. He got the same punishment. He then one day decided to go grab a pizza (they had fucking delivery too) and drive there. He blew through a red light and got pulled over already suspended and basically lost his license for 5 years.

Dumbest fucking advice I’ve ever read. Failing to comply with field sobriety checks results in an automatic license suspension equal to or greater than any you’d receive by complying and failing at the highest level of impairment. Even if you do fail the field breathalyzer they typically still need to take you in for a blood, breath (bench), or urine test

>But my massa said-

Fuck off. Every state varies but you have rights, and refusing the breathalyzer is one of them. Here's California for example:

You Can and Should Refuse the Preliminary Alcohol Screening (PAS) Device Test

>The PAS breathalyzer test that the police ask you to take when you are pulled over for DUI is not mandatory, and you can refuse this breathalyzer test without penalty, unless you are under the age of 21. The main purpose of the PAS device test is for the officer to establish probable cause to arrest you for DUI.

>As a side note, you should also refuse the field sobriety tests for the same reason. These tests are given by an officer who already suspects that you are guilty of drunk driving, and you have no reasonable expectation that they will be administered fairly.

>You Cannot Refuse the Chemical Breath Test without Penalty

The breathalyzer test you are given at the police station after your arrest is mandatory, and if you refuse to take it, you are subject to additional penalties under California’s “implied consent” law.

The camera's already rolling at this point... and after a quick cut, there I am, driving a behemoth of a tour bus across a bridge that barely fits it, on a rainy night, with a bottle of tequila in my face. I made sure to scream at the far side of the bridge, then went back to where Jeeves was soiling himself, and handed him back the keys. I apologized for belittling him, and reminded him that we're all rock star divas, and that he has done a fantastic job of schlepping us around and putting up with our nonsense so far.

To make it food related, we were all really hungover the next day (including Jeeves... we went hard when we stopped), and we probably cleaned out a tiny little Texas diner of all of its coffee, hash browns, bacon and eggs. Little old Bertha had no idea the hell that morning would bring, but she made some good quid that day.

I've driven after a few beers hundreds of times. It takes around 9 beers for me to go above 0.8 so I usually just stop at 2-3 to be safe. But one time... Was at a buddies who lived 30 mins from me. We spent the night drinking and having a bonfire. I have no recollection of why, but I decided to drive home rather than stay at his place. So it's 4 am and I'm fucking spinning not even able to hold my lane. I make it to about 5 minutes from my place. I had puked all over myself and my car at that point. 2 cop cars get behind me with their lights on. They come up with flashlights and I literally forgot how a window rolled down so I opened the door (with vomit leaking out of the door.) I say that I had really bad food poisoning from last night's chinese. They search me and ask the typical questions. They then have me do field sobriety. I somehow didn't fuck it up at all. Was expecting them to pull out the breath. but they didn't. They gave my knife back and told me to go straight home. If there is a god, he intervened here. There was no fucking way 2 cops who know I'm wasted would let me go especially considering my town is known for having some of the worst police.

Ever since then I have stopped drinking and driving. I will not touch the wheel unless I am completely sober. A $30 uber is a hell of a lot better than ruining my life with a DUI.

I have driven drunk exactly one time in my life. It was after my brothers 21'st birthday party. It was just a couple friends of ours but we stayed up till probably 4 in the morning talking drinking and eating. I was going to crash there but there were too many of us and not enough places to sleep and I only lived a few miles away. I wasn't stumbling drunk but I was definitely over the limit. I was so terrified on that drive but I'll tell you what I probably drove safer than I have ever driven sober. I was slapping myself on the face every 10 seconds, sitting straight up eyes peeled on the road, hands death gripping the wheel.
