Hops weren't a prevalent ingredient in beer until the 12th century. Prior to that gruit (herbal mixtures) were used. Some brewers still brew beers using gruit.

yeah, but today beer is legally defined as having hops, so if your goal is to buy beer at the grocery store without hops you are gonna have a bad time

Not in the US.

I am not seeing where in that article it mentions US beer labeling laws and whether gruit can be labeled as beer

Genesee is one of those regional brewers of cheap beer that does an extremely good job, especially with their seasonally. This stuff is excellent and costs the same as Genny Cream Ale

Nah, gruit is legally beer in the US, but that's not the issue. If there's no hops, it's regulated under the hard-ass FDA instead of the TTB. Nobody wants to be under that microscope, so brewers add a couple token hops pellets to the batch.

Gruit was the de-facto way to make beer for a LONG ass time. Back then beer had stimulant/psychotropic properties, with the Catholic church maintaining the bittering herbs. The Protestants were vying for power and spread hard propaganda against it, eventually pushing gruit out through merchant deals.

So I'm reading that Myrcene is the chemical that gives marijuana the "couch lock" effect. Is that true? Who here is a Professional MJ Inhaler?
I know there was a big backlash when hops were introduced, and maybe that's why. Makes sense from a guy-on-the-street perspective: your beer *was* balanced between herb stimulant and alcohol depressant, now it's double depressant. Perfect for protestant rule.

I don't know man, my understanding is that if you don't put hops in it legally is not considered beer and falls into a different regualtory category

This is not to say the breweries cannot do it, just that it is considered a different class of product, something that article does not address. I haven't researched it or anything though, thats just the impression I have from stuff I have read in the past, I could be wrong

How do I add vanilla beans to a beer? I just primaried about 4 gallons of stout, and I've got two vanilla beans to add. I'm planning on doing a secondary (never done one before) to try to get my beers clearer with less sediment than I've had in previous batches. So I'll add them during secondary next weekend.
But how? I've heard soaking them in bourbon and then dumping the beans + bourbon in the batch works, but how much bourbon do I use? I don't mind a little bourbon in the stout but don't want the bourbon to overpower the other flavors, so can I get away with just a few ounces of bourbon? Is that enough?
Or is there another way to add them while also sanitizing them? I've heard vanilla beans don't do well with being boiled/cooked.

if you want to avoid bourbon flavors vodka might be a better choice, I don't know much about this specifically but I imagine the purpose of the bourbon is to more easily dissolve some of the compounds in the beans and it would be the alcohol doing that so vodka should do the same without any flavor component of its own

If you're under the Reinheitsgebot maybe. The Germans did well with those limitations but it's not something that needs to stick around in the world of abundance we have now. The use of barley itself is also kinda weird in the sense that normally you'd use whatever locally sourced grain you'd have on hand.
