On my trip to Italy it was incredibly common for the drinks to have no ice. And this was in the middle of the summer during a heat wave. The only place I went that ever had anything close was a shitty little hole in the wall in Rome called the Brillo Grillo, which served our drinks in chilled glasses that were so cold the bit of liquid that first hit the bottom of the glasses ended up freezing and floating up to the top as its own ice.
