As much as I want to love Japanese food, I can't. Outside of Ramen and Okonomiyaki most of the food has the same flavor. It's not bad by no means but it isn't isn't on my bucket list when I think of foods to try out. Why is Japanese food taste the same?

because all of their food has soy sauce, sake, mirin and sugar in it.

Living on an island means limited resources. If seven samurai is to be believed rice was once considered a luxury. Most ate millet.

Years ago I saw a youtube where a guy was teaching people English. He had them tell him what they ate in English. They mostly ate rice and bread. The stereotype is they eat a lot of fish but that is not the case. To people who have such a bland diet any flavor would be considered intense.

These are the same people who think a parfait with fresh fruit in it and whipped cream for cake icing is decadent. You shouldn't expect much from the Japanese in terms of flavor.

The Japanese live lives of routine not excitement.

the -only- culinary exposure japan had for thousands of years, before the westerners went in the 1800s, were desperate criminals fleeing the mainland and buddhist monks who were vegan on a very bland diet (because spices excited the senses). And....they brought soy sauce, miso, tofu to japan.

let that sink in a bit

japan was the backwater backwater of the world

Nice. I tried to make some with umeboshi because my japanese friend recommended it to me. That's when I discovered I reaally hate umeboshi. I love umeshu though.

Westerners were in japan in the 1600's. You're thinking of the hermit kindom, korea.

Because all you try is the mild stuff
Try their curries, there's way more rahmen flavora than you think.

Theyre way more creative and have way more variety of foods than most western countries but you have to go there to actually get ahold of them the industries won't come over

It is if you live anywhere with a decent Asian population. There are at least a couple Asian grocery stores in my city where you can get them.
