It's not about Imperial vs Metric, it's about weight vs volume. It's almost always preferable to go by weight. That way it doesn't matter if you pack it in or lightly scoop it.

Metric has the distinct advantage of easy and consistent unit conversions.

In regards to the pedantic points about mass vs weight, it's moot given that you are cooking on Earth. Kitchen scales convert measurements of weight into mass (yes, even if your chosen unit is metric), given the Earth's gravity.

Ultimately, cooking is about RATIOS. A 75% hydration ratio dough, 16:1 water to grounds for coffee, 2 parts whiskey to 1 part vermouth for a Manhattan, etc. You could measure in anything you fucking want: a coffee cup, your grandma's slipper, the concave spot above your top lip. In 1799, the metre was redefined in terms of a prototype metre bar (the actual bar used was changed in 1889). In 1960, the metre was redefined in terms of a certain number of wavelengths of a certain emission line of krypton-86.

8 or 12 base units where useful back when pretty much nobody was educated and people didn't have much tools for mental math nor did they have electronic calculators. Literally the only advantage it has is that it makes dealing with thirds and quarters easier. That's all. For your average uneducated peasant that was a great advantage.

But you're still dealing with a 8/12/... base unit systems while simultaneously using a 10 base number system. Which makes the whole thing harder to use. Anyone who completed elementary school has enough knowledge of mathematics to deal with base 10 fractions and if they aren't, they still have access to calculators.

Besides, now you have to problem not being able to do "fifths". So what now? A base 30 system? But then you lose the "fourths", so move it up to base 60? The Babylonians did it, and we still use it to measure angles (No, don't look at radians!).

And on top of that you have to use IS units when communicating with the rest of the world anyway. Which is the biggest disadvantage in an interconnected would where information goes the world round in less than a second. Any meager advantage your system has loses all its power in light of this fact.

You see, that's unpractical.
People have gotten more educated, not smarter. We're forcing kids to sit for 8 hours of schooling pretty much every day for 18 years and yet when they graduate after just a few years they've forgotten almost all of it.

You forget what you don't use. Nobody has a problem with the 60/24 system of time because we use it all the time. But unless it's part of your daily life you're probably not using units of measurement all the time. I'm not an American, but even I've seen Americans say stuff like "How many inches makes a foot again?". Even OPs pic says something like it. It's clearly a problem.

Now IS units are a uniform base 10 system. The same for all measurement. The same as our number system. Not even an 85 IQ baseline retard would forget it. That's why it's superior.

In a perfect would maybe we would use base 60 for everything, but alas.
Since calculators and international communication are a thing, standards have a huge merit. Even if those standard aren't always the best.

0 degrees Celsius literally corresponds with the freezing point of water.
If it's going to be 0 degrees or less I know its gonna freeze and I need to watch out if I go outside.
For Fahrenheit that's an arbitrary 32 degrees.

I know boiling water is 100 degrees Celcius.
For Fahrenheit that's an arbitrary 212.

Those are fl oz measuring cups. You can measure a cup of sugar by volume with it, but you need a scale if you're looking for 2 ounces of sugar by weight, for example. American recipes don't usually do that though since they can ask for 1/2 cup or whatever volume matches up with weight. I have no issue using either imperial or metric for anything as long as I can go by weight in baking.

Nonsense, it’s metrics that is the arbitrary system and more importantly, it has no relation to the users.

For example, a liter is defined as 1000 cubic centimeters, which is a derivative of the meter, which is defined as the length of the path travelled by light in a vacuum in 1/299,792,458 of a second. If that’s not fucking arbitrary, I dunno what is.

Meanwhile, the good old traditional gallon is based on the quantity of liquid an _average human_ can comfortably carry and pour and this has remained more or less constant throughout thousands of years of human history, with pottery jugs from ancient Mesopotamia being roughly one gallon in capacity.

Did you know that the modern imperial system is defined in terms of metric units?

There is a natural correlation between 2 eggs, 2 cups of flour, a cup oa sugar, etc. Meanwhile in eurofag measurements you're stuck with either kilograms which are massive or grams which are tiny and useful only to drug dealers.

> Did you know that the modern imperial system is defined in terms of metric units?

Sure, in fact the auto industry here in Detroit (I was a machinist for 25 years) designs cars and trucks in metric and then converts the measurements into American standard for production.

But that doesn’t change my point, that metrics is wholly arbitrary and has nothing to do with the end users of the measurement system.

A pint is a pint because that’s the most convenient size container for a _human_ to consume liquids, whereas a liter is both too big for casual sipping yet too small for transporting liquids so while metric measurements can easily be divided/multiplied by ten, this is irrelevant in 99% of real life situations.

When you’re making dinner and the recipe calls for X cups of water, you’re not stopping to do the math in your head to figure out how many ounces that is, you just pour in the correct amount and get on to cooking.

>>13193046

Doesn’t change the point that the liter wasn’t _designed_ to be convenient for the human users, it’s a wholly arbitrary measurement that just happens to fit your pocket, a pocket that was designed to be convenient for the human user.

That metrics can be easily divided/multiplied doesn't matter except to scientists and engineers, regular normal people aren't doing the math when they're cooking and such.
