Why are American recipes so dumb?

A cup of huh?
A stick of butter? How big is a stick?
What is a fluid oz, and why is it different from an oz? What is a cup of broclli? so I google it

>The following nutrition information is provided by the USDA for one cup (91g) of raw chopped broccoli.
>A serving of raw broccoli is 1/2 cup or 36 grams

WHAT THE FUCK THESE ARE DIFFERENT NUMBERS

Literally you cannot defend this unless you're braindead. And don't tell me about ratios, you can use ratios without dumb cups and shit

A cup is a standardized volume measurement. Pretty much every kitchen has a set of cup fractionals (.25, .33,.50,.66,1.0 etc) and a set of Tablespoon fractionals. These are not as precise as a weight measurement, but for simple cooking they work just fine.
A stick of butter refers to the packaging that butter comes in. Almost every domestic butter producer uses the same standardized size of stick or at least marks the volumes of butter on the package.
