13056522 No.13056522 [Reply] [Original]

I'm mostly vegetarian but I like steaks and burgers too much to truly give up on them right now.

Now I heard these taste just as good as a real burger, is that true?

>> No.13056532

>>13056522
They're pretty good and the taste and particularly the texture are close to real meat. They're worth trying at least once.

they have a weird smell, they are too soft, and they taste more like a slimjim than they do to beef

I've tried one. Expensive but not bad. It tastes like a burger that "something isn't right, but I can't put my finger on it".

Imo I eat meat so I'd rather just get a burger. Although it's great for veg/vegans for another option.

Would I buy it again? Nah.

They've made statements that say they'll be cheaper than real meat sometime in 2020 once they've completed they're newest phase of production. That includes government subsidies. Technically they're cheaper than beef currently but taxes subsidize beef by about 60%.

>> No.13056600

>>13056577
Better? Sure. Cheaper? Not for a long time.

It's in the "niche" market, meaning if it's a vegans only option at a good burger, they are going to keep the price high, because vegans will buy it.

The price of the market is ALWAYS what the consumer will pay, regardless of how cheap it is to make

>> No.13056615

>>13056600
Vegans aren't going to buy it, they tested on animals to make it. That means they'll buy the first copycat competitor's who markets it as a vegan product.

Bought one of these before the big ad hype started and I didn't read the fine print (I'm used to just ordering whatever theme burger they have) so I had no idea what I was getting into. By the third bite I knew something was seriously wrong. I had to go back up the counter and read the board to conform my suspicions.

I had whichever fake burger that BK sells a little while ago and it was decent. If you didn't tell me it wasn't meat I probably wouldn't notice. I also haven't had a real whopper in a while, so I don't really have a clear point of comparison.

I also used to get beyond meat catered for work meetings every once in a while and they're decent enough, but salty as shit like any fake meat I've ever eaten.

They aite, but still too expensive to be a viable alternative for me personally. Also way too salty.

The only reason they're expensive is because the govt doesn't subsidize it. If the government subsidized mock meats it'd be significantly cheaper than subsidized real meats

The overwhelming majority of government subsidies go to meat and dairy and its unsustainable.

It's unsustainable because people are eating so much they get fat and disgusting, which results in billions in medical costs. And yeah I agree but people should have self control, but if everyone exercised self control then all that meat and dairy would rot on the shelves.
