I worked for Papa Johns a few years ago when they were pushing online ordering so they could cut the time they had to pay employees to take phone orders. If you ordered online you would get discounts.
We had people calling in (nearly always older folks) demanding that we give them these discounts over the phone.
Well first off, we couldn't even put them into the POS because these were corporate online-only deals. Secondly, if they were polite we could give them an 800# to call corporate and they would have someone enter their order online over the phone for them.
What usually happened?
They'd call us pieces of shit trying to rip them off with false-advertising. You could try to explain to them all you wanted to that this was an online promo only because the company wants people to start ordering online to save money they would have to pay to employees answering the phones. They could never grasp this concept.
It was always niggers and old men causing the problems too.

Another good reason to have real people answering the phone is that all of that information can be entered into a database for searching, then QA/QC can get ahold of it to make improvements. When I worked McDonald's we had a corporate policy to charge people 25 cents for a sauce packet. Of course I only ever did it if the customer was rude or something and liked to give out those packets for free to make people's day.
Once we got the self order booths if you entered in sauce packets it would automatically charge you for them.
When people see you charge them for sauce that is the ultimate argument starter. But corporate doesn't have to get the earful from them, you do, as the Mcmanagement. You tell them to take their complaints to the online survey site, that corporate definitely doesn't read. Because you can't do anything else about it. And people have tried to suckerpunch me and shit before because they know the online site is where opinions go to die.
