They used to be at every Chinese restaurant with a little thing of hot mustard and another of sweet&sour sauce aka duck sauce but then it disappeared, almost overnight. I never see that anymore at Chinese restaurants.

i do all of my shopping at international markets because i'm gay and a weeaboo

Buy seaweed. There's no shortage of things you can't put it in. Finely chop it and mix it into your rice before turning on your rice cooker to make 'dirty' rice.
Hon dashi instant stock is a really good addition to most asian broth. Try making miso soup. Here's some miso I made awhile back.

If you haven't had a chance to get melon drinks or steamed buns like manapua or hum bao, I highly recommend both. It's my lunch some weekends.

There's also a lot of types of dry and soaked noodles, please take advantage of this to try everything and see what you like. That sentiment also extends to the whole store. I will deliberately buy things when I'm not sure of what they are just to try them. It's never once failed me, everything is a learning experience.

>>12853994
Orion is good shit
I would also suggest sake though it can be polarizing as hell. There's no shame in flavored sake, I have a bottle of cucumber sake hanging around.

There are two ways smelly underachieving wh*teoids can shop at an asian store successfully:

1. Near the register, all of the pocky and daifuku and shit like that is conveniently placed in easy view. Buy that because let's be honest that was the main thing on your list. Some part of you says you should branch out but let's be honest, it's going to smell unfamiliar and you won't know what to do with it anyway and what if the cashier laughs at you? Just don't bother.

2. Block the aisles with an empty cart autistically googling stuff. Occasionally give imploring looks to other customers about your age who are asian as if you want to ask for help but are afraid it would be rude. Stare hungrily at the contents of their carts as though the secrets of the universe are contained therein. Occasionally, pretend not to reach for something they just reached for, until they are just out of sight. Then google it furiously. After an hour of this, throw some random dried sea creature into your basket, and the pocky obviously. You weren't going to forget the pocky, but I thought I should mention it. Also when it's checkout time talk really slowly and loudly to the cashier because they have a slight accent and that means they don't speak English at all.

speaking of Asian shit
I had a roommate from Taiwan named Yiying many years ago that turned me onto and gave me the orange rice cooker you see on the left. the Tatung cooker, according to him they're in just about every single household in Taiwan and this model was already many years old when I got it. He brought it with him from Taiwan to North Carolina, USA because he knew you couldn't find anything like it here and he needed it for his home cooked chinese food. He didnt want to bring it back home so he gave it to me and I'll be damned, this thing is a miracle machine. All it is is a pot shaped steamer, but its such a versatile appliance I bought a second one from amazon for like $80! Not cheap but so worth it

You put your rice and water (1:1 ratio) in a bowl of your choosing or the provided metal pot that fits inside the cooker, and two parts water in the cooker. You can just set your bowl of rice in the pool of water and let it steam away in there. the provided aluminum dish will actually float around on top of the water for a while. It float steams your rice yo!
You can use it for anything that can steam. I like to heat up cans of soup while they're STILL IN THE CAN! Awesome for heating up tamales too.

a bowl of rice that was cooked in the same bowl its served in is literally perfectly aesthetic. perfect bowl molded rice cake.

I almost made a thread of its own for this machine but I'm new to /ck/ and I didn't want to offend anyone by posting something that wasn't fast food.

Every fucking Japanese restaurant owned by a Korean family or Chinese restaurant owned by an American family or Thai restaurant that uses premade and preserved curry paste tastes the same. OP, look for the stuff you can't get at an oriental section in the big box groceries. Just go aisle to aisle.
If there is fresh kimchee case with jars made by some local korean grandma's business, seek out the green onion kimchee. Amazing on everything.

The noodle aisle might reveal variety, round or giant rice papers for summer rolls, or some wider or thinner udon versions. Freezer might have frozen doughs for egg rolls or even dumplings.

In the condiments, I like chili paste that is not with garlic. I look for naturally fermented tamari, dark soy, some unusual rice vinegar flavors such as yuzu, coconut vinegar, tamarind pastes, maybe some mustard and sesame things. Big bags of black sesame (cookie making). Fresh chilies. Yard long beans. Kaffir lime. Galangal. Dried mushrooms. Bok choy.

Lychee anything, from coconut pectin gelatin bites to frozen sorbet or ice cream bars. Boba tapioca pearls. Jasmine or oolong loose tea. Work friendly small packets of sweetened condensed milk or instant french-vietnamese coffees. Snacks like green tea jelly beans or candies, kasugai mango gummies, milk tea hard candies. Kelp rice crackers, sesame or shrimp chips, durian items, chips with pandan flavor. K beauty creams. Forbidden rice.
